The Diary of a Nobody – Mon 6/18/2018

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, June 18
And the robins are back!!!

I am not making that up!!!…Recall that last week I had noted a robin had returned to their nest…They had been earlier this spring with four eggs in the nest, but one day while doing the lawn I noticed the robins weren’t fleeing the nest when I walked by…I checked and the eggs were gone and The Wife suspected a cat – not ours, of course – got to them…I wasn’t entirely certain I believed that, because the nest was more or less intact, but The Wife knows more about these things than I do.

Well, the robin(s) are still flying out of the nest when the kitchen door is used…I thought they were just looking for a place to crash but I checked today and there are three eggs in the nest!!!…I can’t look on my own, of course, the nest is too high up on the electric meter, but I stuck the phone up and took a pic, confirming it…The Shire hosted the robins last year, and they had four chicks and The Wife and I are both hoping they make it this time.

Had dinner with my old friend Chris tonight…We disagree about when the last time we saw each other was, tho we agree it was in Vegas…I think it was a night out we had that ended up at a burger joint on The Strip at 0400, but he insists it was watching a women’s World Cup soccer game at the MGM…No matter, we both agree it has to have been coming up on 20 years, and this was the first time I’d met his wife Kelly and their daughter Ellie. …They were coming thru town on their summer road trip, barely making it in time after waiting for their car to be repaired in the next state after a lady hit them.

We went to the diner, of course…Chris had been following my adventures there, especially my claims the Stromboli was created by God The Father on the Seventh Day, and there was no other option, really…Chris has significant street cred in this matter and he had to try it…I was so committed to Chris and family having a great experience at my small town diner I even made a couple of spot checks over the past month or so, to make sure the quality was still high…Ellie noted there sure seemed to be a lot of cheese on everything, with Kelly noting she had the good sense to put veggies on top her pizza, for better health.

Almost interesting is Chris’s father, a retired teacher and basketball coach, was my coach one year at John Wooden’s basketball camp growing up…I went twice, before seventh and eighth grade, I think, tho it could have been sixth and seventh grades…Anyway, I ran into Chris years later when we were both reporters at a small newspaper in the California desert and his dad was the basketball coach at the high school…I still have my evaluation cards from both trips…Chris’s dad noted that I was a pretty good team player, but I had trouble shooting with someone guarding me.

The Wife is still away, tho she should be home next week, and I gotta be honest, the house is starting to smell like guy and cat…I try, but I do not have the Good Housekeeping seal, and I explained this to Chris and Kelly when they pulled up to the house…I did change the kitty litter…We were obliged to get a different box of litter last time and that didn’t really do a good job of odor control, not that I could tell, but I was able to return to her usual stuff this week, and I replaced it today, which I know helped…I also got one of those plug-in air fresheners, too.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0900 Monday until 1600 Monday…Seven hours, all solid, too…Mostly solid…I did wake up at 1145 to use the can, but I went back to sleep.

Friends, there will be a charge for this feature in the near future…If you are reading this, Sparrow has a complimentary subscription for you…Send an email to gaylonthewriter at gmail to get started.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
