The Diary of a Nobody – Thu 6/14/2018

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, June 14
Ended up pretty busy – relatively speaking, of course – considering I didn’t really have anything planned for today.

I had lunch with Tim from the Sons of the Legion squadron today…The Sons is part of the Legion and membership is reserved for men who are descendants of either Legion members or someone who died in battle…My membership is thru both Grandpa Sparrow and Pa Sparrow, who served during Wars I and II…Regular readers of this crap may – or they may not – remember that I was appointed Squadron Commander a couple of months…Tim was appointed adjutant recently, too…No one is entirely sure whom we replaced.

Tim is new to the adjutant racket, and he wanted to go over the paperwork he had been sent…He was willing to do it, but he needed some help….Actually, it wasn’t too much paperwork, but if you’re not familiar with it it can seem like a lot…Tim had been given the Consolidated Squadron Report, a delegate registration form for next week’s convention, a form for awards nominations and an Officer Report.

I looked them over and reviewed them with Tim…I wasn’t overly familiar with them, either because for the past six years Stanko had taken care of all post’s paperwork while I was commander, but they’re pretty self-explanatory….I took the Consolidated Report and the delegate registration form home to fill out,  and Tim took the Squadron Officer Report to finish filling out because he needed the info on Vance, our finance officer.

I got right to work when I got home…The Consolidated Squadron Report was easy…You merely check the boxes of the activities you were involved in and the money you spent or donated…As it was, Squadron 89 hadn’t done squat the past year, but I put in 10 hours of community service for the hours we did helping at the Post 89 burger trailer at the races and whatnot…It’s not too much, but as I told Tim with some work we’ll have more next year.

I also wrote up a letter – we don’t have email addresses for anyone – inviting members to our July 5 meeting…I got fancy, too, and made a letterhead with the Sons emblem on it…We’re a pretty small town and when I went to address the envelopes some PO Box numbers were in double digits and one gentleman’s family had been in town so long he had box #2…I haven’t kept exact figures over the years, but I think that is the lowest PO Box number I’ve ever sent mail to…It didn’t take too long to do this and I even went to the post office and sent them off, too.

Later, Tim came over to drop of the Squadron Officer Report…He noted his grandparents used to live across Maple Street and it had been years since he’d been inside the main residence of The Shire and he said he seemed to remember a fireplace where the heater is now, which is something The Wife has long suspected because there is a chimney coming out of the roof, a clue even a dolt like me could pick up on.

In other news from the day, I made an appointment to get my oil changed at the local shop Friday…The good news is it only costs $25, a full $20 less than the thieves in town charge…And there is a robin using the previously abandoned nest right next to the kitchen door…I noticed one scurrying out when I was heading out the door…I probably should have checked to see if they laid any eggs.

Also, I started in on watering the lawn, but the wind really made a mess of it…I came back from lunch with Tim and the sprinkler had been blown a few feet away on its side, so I shut it off, but in the evening the wind died down and I was able to get a good soaking in.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1730 Wednesday until 0630 Thursday…13 hours, most of them pretty good, too, tho I did get up a couple of times to use the can.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
