It’s a long walk and the old biddy is in her nightie, a white, cotton knee-length deal that was a tad shearer than either prudence mandated or ol’ Sparrow desired…

In 1898 – The first circumnavigation of the Earth is completed when mariner Joshua Slocum arrives at Newport, Rhode Island. Slocum had departed Briar Island, Nova Scotia in July 1895 and had initially sailed to Gibraltar, before turning around and heading toward South America in order to avoid Mediterranean pirates. Slocum rarely touched the helm and navigated mainly using dead reckoning and noon sun sightings.

In 1977 – Willie McCovey of the San Francisco Giants becomes the first major leaguer to hit two home runs in an inning twice in a career in a 14-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. McCovey hit two home runs and had five RBIs in a 10-run sixth inning, matching the feat he had done in 1973. The mark has since been accomplished by Andre Dawson, Jeff King, Alex Rodriguez, and Edwin Encarnacion

In 1960 – The Kingston Trio is at #1 on Billboard’s mono album chart for the seventh of ten non-consecutive weeks with Sold Out – the fourth of five #1 albums for the group – and Terry Snyder and the All Stars are at #1 on Billboard’s stereo album chart for the seventh of 13 non-consecutive weeks with Persuasive Percussion, which would spend 124 weeks on a Billboard album chart. Billboard maintained separate mono and stereo charts until August 1963 and research into Terry Snyder and the All-Stars’ chart history was inconclusive.

It’s rare when we get lazy like this, but a day spent in bed reading is seldom time wasted, so it’s not as if we sluffed off doing nothing, but still, we are going to be tired Monday afternoon and there will be things to do…

In 1948 – The Lottery, a short story by Shirley Jackson, is published in The New Yorker. The story concerns a small town that holds an annual lottery where the winner is stoned to death, in the belief that the sacrifice will result in a bountiful harvest and general prosperity. Though critically acclaimed, the story garnered immediate negative mail. Jackson would later say the inspiration for the story walking home from the grocery store and that she wrote the story in an afternoon.

In 2022 – The Colorado Avalanche with the Stanley Cup, defeating the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 to win the series four games to two. It was the third and most recent NHL title for the Avalanche and the second and most recent finals loss for the Lightning. Artturi Lehkonen scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and Colorado’s Cale Makar was named the MVP of the playoffs.

In 2006 – Shakira and Wyclef Jean are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Hips Don’t Lie. The song went to #1 in 15 other countries, including Italy, the Czech Republic, and Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 5th-biggest song of the year. It remains the only #1 hit on the Hot 100 for Shakira and was the second and most recent pop #1 for Jean.

The Diary of a Nobody/June 25

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Sunday, June 25
There was a couple, about my age and all dressed up, sitting in the lobby when we reported for duty, with the lady looking pretty hot, the type of mid-50s blonde that has loved ol’ Sparrow since we were in diapers…Chris later allowed how they were pretty drunk and waiting for ground transportation…We asked, in hushed tones, if we could give only the lady a ride wherever she wanted to go and Chris said probably, noting they were going to the campground on the far side of town.

The Daily Dose/June 25, 2023
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea You know, Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters have some street cred here and know that when you go underwater in a ship you risk not surfacing. Still tho, no one concerned with this did their due diligence, as vessel should’ve been taken out of service ages ago…Five needless deaths, as lawyers in a variety of jurisdictions wringing hands over imminent lawsuits.

2. Houston Astros at Los Angeles Dodgers Story out of LA is not how umpire nailed balk call that let in go-ahead run in 8th inning, but how petulant pitcher threw tantrum and got ejected, another sign that makes Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” America has lost all respect for authority…Oh, and a balk does not have to be intentional…It is a balk whether you meant to or not.

3. Mass Shootings The 3-hole staple…15 mass shootings – defined here as shootings with at least four wounded and/or killed – a bit off last week’s pace, but twelve (12) dead, 84 (84) injured still solid figure…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “strangely suspect” 100 years from now all new people will look back and wonder why we did nothing about this.

4. Paris 2024 Parisians going for gold in one of most competitive of Olympic sports, bribery and scandal by organizing committee, as French prosecutors looking into malfeasance concerning signing of public contracts by Paris 2024 organizers…It’s actually second scandal by Paris, as investigation opened in 2017 right after they were awarded Olympics.

5. Fake News Click here to read what the wizards amongst us were actually believing this week…Used to fill space when Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters unwilling or unable to find legitimate #5 entry…Courtesy of AP.

In 1876 – Plains Indian tribes – including the Lakota and Dakota tribes – led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Hore and US Army troops under Lt Colonel George Custer fight at the Battle of Little Big Horn in what is now southern Montana. Custer died later in the day and the battle would result in a resounding victory for the Indians, though the Great Sioux War would later result in a US victory.

In 1961 – The Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Angels establish a new major league record for most pitchers used in a game in a 9-8, 14-inning Orioles victory. The teams combined to use 16 pitchers – eight by each team – and research into whose record they broke was inconclusive. The mark has been topped several times since and is now 25, by Colorado and San Francisco in a 2019, 16-inning game and the nine-inning record is 18, done three times.

In 1977 – Marvin Gaye is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Got To Give It Up (Part 1). The song also peaked at #7 in Great Britain and at #1 on Billboard’s soul and disco charts. It was the 17th of 18 Top 10 pop hits for Gaye and his third and final #1 and was his 13th of 14 soul #1s. Gaye was shot to death by his father at the family home in Los Angeles in 1984.

In 1509 – Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon are crowned King and Queen of England. They assumed the throne in April following the death of Henry VII and Henry would reign until his death in 1547. Catherine was not as fortunate, their marriage was annulled in 1533, the first of six marriages for Henry. Henry was responsible for the divine right of kings theory – handy when you’re the king – and for the Church of England’s break with the Roman Catholic Church.

In 2010 – John Isner of the US and Nicolas Mahut of France finish the longest tennis match in history in a first-round match at Wimbledon. Isner defeated Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68, its 183 games and 11 hours, 5 minutes each the longest in tennis history. The match had started on June 22 when the match was concluded after the fourth set and was suspended on the 23rd tied 59-59. Due to changes in the rules in major tournaments, this record is unlikely to be broken.

In 1967 – Jack Greene is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the second of five consecutive weeks with All The Time. It was the third of 31 country hits for Green and his second of five #1s. The song also peaked at #3 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart and in 1959 Kitty Wells hit #18 on the country chart with it. The song was written by Mel Tillis and Wayne Walker.

In 1969 – Warren Burger is sworn in as the chief justice of the United States, replacing Earl Warren, who had retired. He was not the first choice for the position as President Lyndon Johnson had nominated Abe Fortas, who was not confirmed by the Senate and Richard Nixon nominated Burger after he assumed office. Burger served until his retirement in 1986 and later served as chancellor of William and Mary College.

In 1917 – Ernie Shore of the Boston Red Sox establishes a major league for most consecutive batters retired by a relief pitcher in a 4-0 win over the Washington Senators. Shore retired all 26 batters he faced after coming on in the first inning after starting pitcher Babe Ruth was ejected after walking the leadoff batter Ray Morgan. Morgan was caught stealing and for years Shore was credited with a perfect game, though that was later changed to a combined no-hitter. His record still stands.

In 1979 – Donna Summer is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third and final non-consecutive week with Hot Stuff. The song went to #1 in four other countries, including Switzerland and Japan, peaked at #11 in Great Britain, at #3 on Billboard’s soul chart, was Billboard’s 7th-biggest song of the year and their 12th-biggest of the decade. It was the third of four #1 songs for Summer and the song won her the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
