The Diary of a NobodySparrow leaves Hotel B, is in no mood to serve others at the retailer, and finds C note in his box at Hotel C.

We were slammed and understaffed, too, which didn’t help matters, either…I was the only one at the service desk and, again, everything we’d sold the previous 24 hours had been returned and for the last hour or so I was also the only one manning self-checkout, too, and not everyone got the service they really deserve.

In 1906 – Reginald Fessenden, a Canadian and American inventor, transmits the first radio show from his laboratory in Massachusetts. Fessenden offered a poetry reading, some live violin music and closed with a Bible passage. Radio receivers were rare then, and his audience was mainly naval vessels, though his show was heard as far away as Virginia.

In 1967 – Joe Namath of the New York Jets, then of the American Football League (AFL), throws for 343 yards against the San Diego Chargers, finishing the season with 4,007 yards, the first professional player to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season. The Jets won the game 42-31 and the single-season NFL passing mark is now held by Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos, who threw for 5,477 yards in 2013.  Namath’s mark was good for 107th place on the all-time list heading into this season.

In 1966 – Jack Greene is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the first of seven consecutive weeks with There Goes My Everything. It was Greene’s second hit on the country chart and the first of five #1s. The following year Engelbert Humperdinck took the song to #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and in 1971 Elvis Presley hit #9 on the country chart with it.
