They’re off and running Florida where the race between a black Democrat Andrew Gillum and a white, President Trump-back Republican Ron DeSantis has already seen both sides issue the first racial invective.

Gillum said voters aren’t looking for misogynists, racists or bigots while DeSantis was clutch, saying voters shouldn’t “monkey this up” be electing a black. The only real question is if the n-word will be used in an official capacity.

More so than other gubernatorial race, Florida’s race will serve a nice referendum on the Trump Administration.

Sparrow has a couple of walk-ins, rare for the graveyard shift, at the hotel plus the front desk printers still aren’t working, so he prints off some of the morning paperwork in the business center. Plus he gets a rare nap in, all on today’s edition of The Diary of a Nobody.

The Thought for the Day returns, and today’s quote is by Margaret Thatcher who talks about government and how it is unable to solve all of society’s problems.

In 1963 – The hotline between Washington, DC and the Soviet Union goes into operation. Despite what is commonly thought, the system has never utilized a telephone. Initially, communication was by telegraph with a radio backup and went satellite in 1971, fax in 1983 and now uses instant messaging and email. The system is tested hourly with non-official communications, though today will include anniversary greetings as well as good wishes for the coming year on New Year’s Eve.

In 1953 – The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Braves split a doubleheader, 19-4 and 11-5. The Pirates hit a then-major league (ML) record eight home runs in winning the opener, while the Braves hit four home runs while winning game two. The twelve combined home runs establish a National Leage record for home runs in a doubleheader that still stands.

In 1980 – Christopher Cross is at #1 for the first time when Sailing ascends the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Sailing would spend one week at #1n and also hit #1 in Canada though it didn’t even hit the Top 40 in Great Britain, peaking at #48. Cross would also hit #1 the following year with Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do).
