Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Tuesday, May 8
Presided over my final monthly meeting as Post Commander tonight…Natalie, who had been senior vice commander, was elected commander and ran unopposed.

Good…When I was first elected a few years back some joked that I was signing on for a 40-year term because then I was the youngest one in the post and anyone who wanted to be commander had already been commander, probably multiple times…But I am pleased to report that is no longer the case…We have enough new and involved younger members so it is likely ol’ Sparrow can retire and enjoy life as Exalted Past Commander.

We were pretty busy tonight…The big item was finalizing plans for our Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery…It broke my heart to learn we will not be passing out flags to widows this year…Recall we did this a couple of years ago and I still remember thinking this was about as useful a thing as I’ve ever done…I was really looking forward to doing it again this year but we could not rustle up any family members to come and be guests of honor…I am not making that up!!!…Either they had their own funeral already planned and they didn’t want the bother of another one or they didn’t want to come in the first place…Fine…Be that way…Ol’ Sparrow will still be in his Navy dress blues because my uniform still fits, dammit, and will be a sentry taking part in the changing of the guard ceremony…I will still be commander on Memorial Day and I could have insisted on a prominent role appropriate for a post commander, but I enjoyed digging the uniform out and being a sentry last year and want to do it again this year.

After elections, I asked if there was any more business to come before the meeting and there were a couple-three things, which was OK with me because I didn’t mind letting the last meeting linger a bit, but soon enough Past Commander Buck read the prayer and I conducted closing rituals and that was that….A couple of people whose opinion means something told me I did well, but otherwise all the mushy crap will be saved for June’s installation ceremony which, in my role as District Commander, I will preside over.

What’s funny is Stanko is continuing as adjutant…From the time I was first elected he had been making noises about retiring because the adjutant is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the post and the post does not run itself, but he continued to serve, always waving his retirement declaration away…This year he even had Tina lined up to take over and I don’t kow what the hell happened but tonight he said he would run again for the adjutant spot and Tina would remain historian and we concluded that Stanko will be adjutant until his health starts to go…He’s in his 70’s and he is still strong and his mind is sharp, so he may there a while longer.

I did a couple of live Sparrow For Congress videos this week…The first one was OK, the second was pretty good…The first one I did Monday night and I blabbed for six whole minutes, most of which I spent looking down or otherwise away from the camera…I made a mental note to correct it so the one I did this morning after getting home from work I paid close attention to stay looking at the camera…I talked about empowerment being the only issue that mattered and the only question being how long are we going to put up with crappy government…I shared it everywhere and it’s getting good view totals, but as I write this I still am not a household name.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: ??? Tuesday afternoon to 1730 Tuesday afternoon…(The easy way to convert military time is to subtract 12 from any time greater than twelve…For example, 1730 is 5:30pm…You’ll catch on soon enough.)…I have had trouble falling asleep all week and today it was more so…I laid down to read when I got home from work this morning and started nodding off so I roll over and two hours later I’m wondering what the hell is going on here…This happens from time to time when you sleep days, tho, and I was tired enough so I knew I’d eventually fall asleep but I have no idea what was because the next thing I know the alarm is going off…Officially, for the weekly records, we are going to call it 1400, making it three-and-a-half hours for the day.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
