In 1837 – Richard Johnson becomes the first vice president of the United States to be elected by the United States Senate. In the presidential election of 1836 Martin Van Buren had won a majority in the Electoral College however Johnson, Van Buren’s running mate, had fallen one vote short of a majority. Johnson had no trouble winning the contingent election, defeating Whig Francis Granger 33-16 on the first ballot and this remains the only time the Senate has elected the vice president.

In 1896 – What become the Big Ten Conference is formed in Chicago by representatives of Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Chicago, Purdue, and Northwestern. Officially the  Intercollegiate Conference Athletic Association, it was the second collegiate athletic conference in the US. It was commonly known as the Western Conference and became the Big Ten in 1916. Illinois, Minnesota, Purdue, Northwestern and Wisconsin are the only remaining charter members.

In 1975 – Fire by the Ohio Players is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for its only week. Previously, Fire had spent two weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. Fire was their fourth of eight Top 40 hits and their first of two #1s on the Hot 100, with Love Rollercoaster going to #1 the following year.
