The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow, back to eating well, actually says no to three slices of pizza at the hotel and Sparrow suspects a guest called in the services of a hooker. Today’s Diary.

The check-in was this guy into 255…About 15 minutes later a young lady calls and asks for him by name and room number, a best practice utilized by hookers that not even mobile phones have managed to render obsolete and in the time-honored tradition of her trade, she is calling to confirm her client was actually staying where he said he was staying.

Later, the guy comes down to the lobby wondering if the pizza guy has come by yet…No, but just then she sashays thru the door with two pizzas and a box of cheese bread, so if she is still up there they both must have really worked up an appetite and in a fairly short period of time, too.

In 1801 – The United States House of Representatives elects the president of the United States for the first time, breaking an Electoral College tie between Thomas Jefferson and his running mate Aaron Burr. Jefferson, then vice president, had actually defeated President John Adams in the Electoral College 73-65, but the Democratic-Republican Party had neglected to arrange for an elector to not vote for Burr, resulting in both Jefferson and Burr receiving 73 electoral votes. The House elected Jefferson president on the 36th ballot. The tie happened because the Constitution at the time did not require electors differentiate between votes for president and vice president, a flaw addressed in the 12th Amendment.

In 1959 – The Basketball Hall of Fame opens in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the game had been invented in the late 19th century. Among the first inductees were James Naismith, who invented the game, and football great Amos Alonzo Stagg, who had played in the first basketball game in 1892, plus some others you’ve never heard of. To date, 395 individuals have been inducted.

In 1973 – The O’Jays are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Soul Singles chart – for the first of three consecutive weeks with Love Train. It was the second of nine #1s on the soul chart for the O’Jays and in March Love Train would spend a week at #1 on the Hot 100, becoming the O’Jays only #1 song on that chart.
