The Diary of a Nobody/Sunday, December 6, 2020

It’s Read Free Sunday, so today’s Diary of a Nobody entry is on the house.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, December 5
Boy, the desk in the back office at the hotel was a complete fiasco when I reported for duty.

Scattered on the desk were – in no particular order – a UPS package, a notepad, two thumb drives, three chargers, assorted business cards, a receipt (from the cleaners that is no longer same-day pick-up and drop-off service for our guests) and, of all things, a tube of stuff to moisten the sticky part of envelopes.

That black metal organizer was out of hand, too…It was stuffed with pens and markers, the scissors were out of place and it even featured some stick deodorant from the amenities bin…I don’t know who to blame for this, but Amy, I think, was still logged in despite the fact she’d left at 0700, tho there’s a new chick named Nicole on the schedule so who the hell knows?

With ol’ Sparrow being gone for a week the scratch paper pile was noticeably lower, so I started in on replenishing it, but there weren’t a whole lot of sheets added because we’re slow and there wasn’t a whole lot of eligible paper to be torn into quarters…You might think the Virus Era and an utter lack of snow might be keeping occupancy down, but the hotel is actually doing better than we were for the first few days of December last year: 208 rooms vs 171 rooms.

In other news from the Admin Desk, yours truly changed his passwords today…The main login had advised me my current password would expire in 13 days and then later while logging into the rewards club site to prepare registration cards for the day’s arrivals I was told I had to change it right now so I did, so I changed them all…I merely change the character at the end and have been working my way left to right on the keyboard and I’ve been here long enuff now so the final character is the parentheses symbol over the zero.

The knife got only the barest of use this morning, cutting some tape while breaking down two boxes…I’d gone into the storage room to get some cups and lids for Morning Coffee Service and the boxes for each only had a few left, so I put what was left on top of a fresh box and took both boxes to the back office.

It was back to full strength in the gym tonight, the first max workout since before vacation…It felt great, too, and I even threw in the between sets pushup/situp/squat regime, tho that was kept pretty light, only a few of each, but it served its purpose, keeping the heart rate up…

32.34 MPG.

I don’t know what the deal is, which regular readers of this crap know is hardly a bulletin…Mileage has varied since I bought the new ride 13 months ago, starting out below 30 MPG and peaking at a bit over 40 earlier this year…Exactly how you gain and lose ten MPG may never be clear and 32, of course, is still pretty good, so we’re not complaining too much.

Our small town is hiring for a constable, either a lateral transfer or they will fork over for a qualified recruit to get their POST certification…They started this a couple of years ago if I recall correctly, and one guy on the force was hired like this and I think he had to sign a three-year contract or something of that sort.

The ad I saw online, tho, is really pushing for a lateral transfer, pointing out the benefits of small-town life, like not having a diner in town and folks that put their Christmas lights up before Halloween…The pay isn’t too bad, $24-$31 per hour depending on experience.

Speaking of Christmas lights, they’re starting to pop up around town…The neighbor across Main Street has their usual blue strand across the top of their house up, plus two of those wire reindeer’s with white lights on them…That red house next door to that dump that finally sold is dark, probably because the house is vacant right now…Usually, they’re the first ones to put their lights off, usually right after Labor Day.

Driving to the gym tonight there was one house, tho, whose decorations looked butt-ugly…I’m sorry…It looks like I did it, frankly, and that ain’t good…The lights look like they were put up by Stevie Wonder while on the lawn Santa looks like he’s about to trip and fall.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0930 Saturday until 1430 Saturday…5.0 hours for the day, a lousy start to the sleep week…I was pretty rested from vacation, tho, so this isn’t a complete surprise.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
