Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1797 – Frenchman André-Jacques Garnerin becomes the first human to parachute from a high altitude in Paris. Garnerin took attached the parachute to a balloon and rose to a height of 3,300 feet before severing the parachute from the balloon. Garnerin had neglected to include a vent in the parachute and his descent was rather rough, but he landed uninjured. Two years later his wife Jeanne-Genevieve became the first woman to parachute and Mr Garnerin died in a ballooning accident in 1823.

In 2002 – Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche ties the NHL record for most games by a goalie in a 3-3 tie against the Edmonton Oilers. It was the 971st game for Roy to tie the record established by Terry Sawchuck established with four teams from 1949-70. Roy would retire the following year with 1,029 games played and the record is now 1,266 games, established by Martin Brodeur with two teams from 1991-2015.

In 1988 – Phil Collins is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Groovy Kind of Love. It was the twelfth of 21 Top 40 hits for Collins as a solo act, his eighth of 17 Top 10 hits, and his fifth of seven #1 songs. The song went to #1 in nine other countries including Denmark, Portugal, and Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 29th-biggest song of the year. The song was initially offered to Leslie Gore, whose producer rejected it, and in 1966 a version by the Mindbenders peaked at #2 on the Hot 100.
