The Diary of a Nobody/November 22

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Tuesday, November 22
Chris was there when we reported for duty and we made a rather lame joke about how we should’ve called off, what with this being our last shift before vacation and Chris laffed and said he had actually brought his usual nite audit stuff from home and was ready to go 16 hours if need be.

Now, he didn’t think ol’ Sparrow would be a rascal and call off on his last nite before vacation – known as calling off on your last nite before vacation amongst us clock punchers – but he did note that Front Desk Manager Brandon tended to get confused when dealing with his nite auditor’s time off requests…This caused yours truly to tap his nose with a forefinger because bingo, that was an astute, on-the-nose observation…Regular readers of this crap know Brandon has gotten confused before, despite our best efforts, either by scheduling us when we should’ve been off or by not scheduling me when we should’ve been scheduled…This was avoided this time around because Brandon texted me a couple of weeks ago to make sure everything was clarified which was good because he had my departure off by a day.

We had just started in counting drawers when the doorbell rang and there are several guys outside Door 1, some dressed like shrubbery and it was hardly the Upset of the Year to find out they’d been on the road all day and were heading over to the next county Wednesday morning for some elk hunting…The fly in the ointment was their hotel reservations started Wednesday nite in the next county and they were exhausted and needed a place for tonite…Well, welcome home, ol’ Sparrow has plenty of availability tonite.

It turned out they’re from Alabama and if you were directing a movie and asked Central Casting to send over some good ol’ country boys from Alabama, they would’ve sent these guys over…Heck, they weren’t country, they were hill and they were pretty funny hill folk, too…One guy said there were six of them, so ol’ Sparrow suggested three rooms each with two queen beds and they said naw, two rooms with two beds is fine…One has a lousy back and sleeps on the floor and, besides, “we’re from Alabama, we’re used to sleeping close together” which was said in a rather serious manner some might not’ve been particularly comfortable with.

Recall last nite we weren’t exactly certain how today would shape up…We wanted to get a workout in, but whether it was immediately after the hotel or – as usual for Tuesdays – at night after sleep hadn’t been decided…We came prepared for a morning workout, tho, bring out gear and pre-workout supplements…As it was, we felt strong all nite and we were in the gym by 0730…The only problem was, we only brought one of our pre-workout stuff, the green powder/beet powder/branched-chain amino acid stuff that really gets you going; we’d neglected to bring the PUMP2K stuff we started using last month and that we’ve seen good results with.

We could tell the difference…It wasn’t that big of a difference, maybe 3-5 percent, but that’s the difference between really good and your very best and we were only really good today…We got 60 pounds on the squat machine, but the tenth rep was a struggle, and we bumped it down a notch for shoulder side lateral raises, tho hammer curls, the bench press, and the tricep cable machine were the usual weights, tho like the squat machine, the tenth rep was tuff, where with the PUMP2K in us we might well have gotten eleven or twelve reps in.

Our body isn’t screaming for a week off from lifting, but it will do us good…We’ve been moving good weight – really good weight, actually – four times a week for two months, well seven weeks or so, and the rest will provide benefits…We get back in town Wednesday the 30th and will be back in the weight room the next day for our usual Thursday morning workout.

We didn’t get anything packed today, but we did get everything ready to be packed: all laundry was done and we got a week’s worth of vitamins ready and we cleaned up the kitchen a little bit, tho a proper Level I cleaning will be conducted before departure…Still to be decided is how to get to the airport tomorrow…It’s all but in The Shire’s driveway and usually, we make the three-minute drive ourselves, but if we take an Uber we could save $80 or so on parking…Thing is, tho, as hotel guests have found out, we’re not overburdened with Uber drivers here so there might not be one in the morning…And if there is, there is no guarantee there will be one when we get back, tho we’re arriving in the afternoon and the basic laws of supply and demand dictate there probably will be.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1530 Tuesday until 2300 Tuesday…7.5 hours for the day and 25.5 hours for the week.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.

Coming soon! Gaylon’s books in actual book form!
