The Diary of a Nobody/November 26, 2022

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Read Free Sunday (RFS) will return.

Saturday, November 26
Exhausted after yesterday’s day trip, Sparrow’s dream of doing absolutely nothing today was, rather triumphantly, redeemed.

Goal Oriented
One of the keys to success in this life is to have goals and to execute a plan to reach those goals…Today was a good example of that: the goal for today was to do as little as possible and the best – only – way to meet this goal was to do as little as possible…Meeting this goal was neither particularly arduous nor unrewarded.

We were up early (see Sleep Log below) and got the day’s project work done before Aunt Susie joined us about 0630 or so…After an hour we were beat again and starting to yawn and we were back up in our quarters at 0733, ostensibly to do some reading but we knew: it was time for a nap…Now, regular readers of this crap are aware that we are sometimes done for the day on Thursdays – our only day off – rather early, but that just means we report to the chair for reading duty; naps are never involved as we tend to get our rest and naps are seldom needed…This would be the only time we took the robe off all day.

More Leisure
The nap got us caught up on our rest so our relentlessly leisurely could continue…When we wandered back down to the kitchen Aunt Susie was wrapping presents for her grandkids and she was gracious enuff to stop long enuff to put a pot of coffee on for her nephew…We had a nice long chat…She asked about when The Ex and I started having problems and I chronicled the decline of our marriage for her and she told me there were times when she and Uncle Rudy had hardly been Couple of the Year, especially when she was going thru The Change which was really a decade of her being rather difficult to live with.

No Pinky Ring Wearing Today
When we favored everyone with our presence after our nap Uncle Rudy was getting ready to head outside to do some yard work and we went thru the motions of asking if he wanted help and he said sure, but over coffee Aunt Susie said he rather enjoyed working alone in the yard so, out of respect for my beloved uncle, we made the considerable sacrifice of leaving him be.

We were, however, useful, as ol’ Sparrow singlehandedly brought more presents up from the basement (which itself is bigger than our log cabin) to be wrapped and then Uncle Rudy and I tag-teamed on bringing the Christmas tree up…Later Aunt Susie, still brilliantly getting mileage out of the Thanksgiving leftovers, made turkey sliders for dinner

Power Outage
Then, at about 1700, while still watching football, the power went out…I am not making that up…Uncle Rudy called the power company to see what the deal was and the power company’s automated system was triumphantly prepared…They automatically ID’d his number, with the robot noting his address was experiencing problems which you didn’t have to be Thomas Edison to know because we were sitting there in the dark…The robot also, rather hilariously, noted the problem had been resolved which was plain wrong, of course, unless their idea of resolution was the power being out…(Almost interesting was the fact that from the living room we could see several people leaving their house to get a walk in for themselves and their dog.)…Uncle Rudy then followed the prompts to report the outage they already knew about and then the whole cycle was repeated…Uncle Rudy – no dummy – spotted the trend and hung up.

Nitey-Nite
Fortunately, Uncle Rudy and Aunt Susie are admirably prepared for unanticipated darkness, with battery-operated lanterns and even those miner’s lights that strap on your head…One was issued to yours truly and after about a half-hour or so we retired to our room where we got some good reading in and, despite the internet being out, listened to some stuff, too.

We were, frankly, starting to feel our lack of activity…Recall since boarding the plane Wednesday morning we have spent virtually all of our time in a non-active mode, either sitting or laying down…Not to mention eating…In fact, as we lay there doing more nothing we’d been in our robe and jammies for well over 24 hours, since returning from Friday’s day trip…Not that we were complaining…Regular readers of this crap know we lead a very structured life…We are not complaining about this, either, because it’s the life we’ve willingly constructed and when we are no longer pleased with it we are free to change it…But we were feeling it: our unused muscles were starting to get sore which makes no sense but there you are and we made a mental note to get a walk in Sunday.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log
1800 Friday until 0330 Saturday
0730 Saturday until 1030 Saturday

12.5 hours for the day and 52.5 hours for the week, a triumphant total considering we’re way from The Shire…The weekly average for the month comes in at 50.5 hours, a bit less than we’re looking for, but still, officially, a “Solid” total.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.

Coming soon! Gaylon’s books in actual book form!
