The Diary of a Nobody/January 20

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, January 20
Crap, we were forgetful this morning…Not only did we forget to take our preworkout supplements before heading into the gym this morning, but we forgot our protein shake mix, too…It was as if we were off to the library.

The supplements we just forgot; the protein shake tho, we actually thought about when we took the dirty shaker bottle out of the gym bag…Usually we immediately wash it and put new shake mix in because we’re at the age now where if we don’t act on something immediately we forget it and BOOM that’s what happened here and it would follow we’d blow off the supplements, too…We didn’t discover this tragic oversight until we were well on the way into town – too far to turn back – so we dispensed with lifting for the day and ended up getting a pretty solid cardio session in before our soak.

What was funny was there was this younger guy in there chatting up one of the old biddies…I am not making that up…There was only one Friday Biddy there today, and we’d already concluded our weekly chat – it’s the same every week – when this guy, no older than 35, enters the hot tub and sits across from Biddy #1 and the next thing you know he’s chatting her up like he’s working it: snow conditions, mainly, but some other stuff, too…I sat back and admired it, actually…We love age differences, of course – Liz, the Widow B, et al – tho when the the older woman had to leave her young suitor didn’t pursue matters.

There was some moderate action at the veterans service office (VSO) today…Ryan stopped by to see about getting a form filled out to get his General discharge upgraded to Honorable so he could utilize his GI Bill benefits…(He had actually filled out the form with Ed, the VSO in the next county, in December, but it was an outdated form…Why he went to Ed first and was now utilizing ol’ Sparrow will always be a Mystery of the VSO.)

Anyway, the form is easy to fill out, he had his buddy statements and whatnot so after he signed the form, I put everything into an envelope for him and even addressed the envelope for him, tho he said he was going to the post office anyway and would buy postage there…Another Mystery of the VSO is why he got a General discharge…His DD-214 said it was for Misconduct – Serious Offense, but he didn’t elaborate as to what the Serious Offense was – except to say it involved fleeing a constable on a motorcycle – and we didn’t ask.

Jimmy came by, too…We helped file a claim last month and the VA had sent him a letter that he wanted deciphered because Jimmy is one of those who thinks any VA correspondence is beyond his comprehension…It’t not, but he’d rather not fuss with it…As it was, it was merely a request to verify that he still has a wife and the form that was required to be sent in was included, and we filled out in The System and sent it in electronically for him.

The big news is the pinky ring we bought in November while visiting Uncle Rudy and Aunt Susie is in the repair shop…I am not making that up…We dropped it last week while we were in the restaurant using their microwave – and we had it off may never be clear – and the stone fell out…Crap…We bought some crazy glue but then we thought screw it, it will be an heirloom one day and may well end up in the Smithsonian, so we took it to a jeweler in town we used once to get a watch battery fixed…She took a look at it, nodded and said she could take care of it, and even polish it up for us, too, tho she added it would take a couple of weeks for her to get to it.

Even more big news is our hot, new snowblower was delivered, waiting in the carport for us when we got home from the VSO…As we strongly suspected, it is a tad more snow blower than we really need for only a small driveway but two things: 1) We’re not broke and we had the five C note subsidy from the hotel’s holiday bonus and, 2) rather conveniently we read an article somewhere that said men should stop shoveling snow at age 45, an age twelve years in the past, and we’re tired of shoveling berms anyway.

Because of the size, tho, and the space it takes up in the carport, it was immediately nicknamed The Beast…We have some zero clue how to operate it, tho, so we’ll dive in on the owners manual Sunday morning…Fortunately, clear skies are in the forecast for the next few days, so we should get away with not needing it.

Portfolio II slowed a bit today after a strong gains earlier in the week and all told is down a bit for the week, tho still up overall.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1730 Thursday until 0030 Friday
1800 Friday until 2130 Friday

11.5 hours for the day and 47.5 hours for the week, a fine total heading into Saturday’s Sleep Week Finale (SSWF).

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.

Coming soon! Gaylon’s books in actual book form!
