The Diary of a Nobody/February 4

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, February 3
Boy, we slept pretty well tonite (see Sleep Log below) but we woke up feeling like we’d just gone the distance with the champ…Aichiwawa, our sinus problem was still in the mood to be a pain…Literally…The good news, tho, is the medication did its work after a half-hour or so, and when the pain returned, it had subsided a lot…Still tho, prudence dictated we wave off the Friday morning workout, and we actually went back to bed about 0300.

Gary came by the veterans service office (VSO) this morning…Gary was the Legion district finance officer during my years as commander and is a good man and a while back we had filed a claim for high blood pressure – which is now a presumptive illness of Agent Orange exposure – and the VA approved the claim, however, they assigned Gary a 0% rating, which is the VA’s way of saying yeah, our bad, but it’s not bothering you enuff to give you any money…The letter detailed the criteria that would need to be met for a 10% rating – such as certain blood pressure measurements and continuous medication – and Gary said the VA had their heads up their arse because he met those criteria and that the VA has records of this, so we filed an appeal and pointed these things out.

John B also came by to file an appeal…Recall the VA had cut his prostrate cancer rating from 100% to 20% because they said it was getting better, but John had a recent diagnosis that said no, the cancer is back and at Stage 4 no less, so perhaps he’ll get his 100% rating back…I say perhaps because the VSO is not a cancer ward, and the paperwork with the diagnosis could’ve been written in Greek for all ol’ Sparrow understood it.

Here’s the latest on my water heater…Recall the home warranty company (HWC) couldn’t find someone to come out and fix it and they authorized me to find someone to come look at it, at their expense…Well, the company we’ve used in the past is on their Do Not Use list and there are no shortage of options in the area, so we said screw it, and put a post on a Faceplant page…It can’t be just anyone, either…They have to be licensed and insured and they have to call the HWC with a diagnosis and get an authorization number and whatnot.

We still haven’t cashed in that $200 lotto ticket, tho we have decided to let the entire amount ride on another lottery investment…Whether we do all $200 at once or divvy it up amongst multiple drawings is the only issue now…Offhand, we’re thinking doing 100 quick picks would be our best bet but, as noted, we’re hardly you’re go-to guy on odds and games of chance…There’s no rush, and doing ten quick picks for ten separate drawings is in play, too.

Portfolio II had an indifferent week, up a bit and down a bit before finishing the week with modest gains…All told tho, it is still up ten percent.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1600 Thursday until 0030 Friday
0400 Friday until 0600 Friday
1830 Friday until 2130 Friday

13.5 hours for the day and 45.0 hours for the week, an outstanding total heading into Saturday’s finale.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.

Coming soon! Gaylon’s books in actual book form!
