The Diary of a Nobody/May 28

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Sunday, May 28
Chris was back from his PTO – a concert in Dallas – and he advised us that sundry stand prices have been raised and an email from Assitant Fron Desk Manager Q noted the increases were made after he and Chris consulted on the matter…This is just another example of Chris’s rise to power here at the hotel…Recall the new nite audit checklist (NAC) was officially promulgated by AGM Brandon but was mainly Chris’ handiwork, and now he’s consulting on sundry stand prices.

Inflation is now hitting the sundry stand, of course, because costs from our suppliers are going up…Still tho, we certainly aren’t gouging our guests, with prices fairly reasonable almost across the board, somewhat of a surprise considering we’re in tourist trap…The big news is Chris had a printout of what our costs were for sundry stand items and we reviewed it with some interest, interest which those keeping score at home might share: sodas ($3.00) cost us $1.20 or so each, candy ($2.00) cost us about a buck depending on the snack, and our pizza two-packs ($8.00) cost us $3.00…For the record, the highest price the hotel pays to a vendor is $6.20 to a local soap vendor for some homemade crap that tourists go absolutely ga-ga for.

(By the by, Visene was the only item to be rolled back, now priced to move at $6, down from $7.)

Chris still has some deviant in him tho, because he is still declining to use our new money envelopes for cash drops…He is still putting his cash drops in the baggies we used to use tho he is in compliance with filling the mandate of filling out the Cash Drop Log sheet.

The big news is tonite is our first sell-out in several weeks…This means our sold-out bonus kicks in and because neither Luke nor Gloria were in today it means our average daily rate (ADR) of $218 is divided only amongst us four desk clerks that worked today: Tammy, Q, Chris, and yours truly, netting each of us about $55, not too bad.

Almost interesting is the fact the left drawer was $27.75 short…No, we don’t why, either…This calls for highlighting on the Cash Drawer Spreadsheet (CDSS) of course, and while you might think our experience reviewing Mark’s CDSS every week might have some sway, we went with the highlighter that was in easy reach, which in this case was orange.

Twice tonite ol’ Sparrow’s Spanglish was greeted with a fusillade of Spanish words which he hardly understood…Both times came when we were obliged to tell vatos we were sold out…The first time the guy pointed to his buddy and tried to explain why they needed a room, which is estupido because we couldn’t care less why you need a room: you could be giving birth and we’d still be sold out…The second time, Christ, we had some zero clue what the senor was talking about because he had some zero English and spoke Spanish as if I was Don Juan and would easily understand his blatherings…We didn’t, and it took a while to get him out the door.

We enjoyed a very leisurely Sunday at The Shire, mainly doing some reading, but also watching a couple of things on our phone because we were lying in bed and that was the easiest way to do it…The big thing we did was make sure our Legion uniform was ready for Monday’s ceremony at the cemetery because if we put it off until we head out the door for the hotel tonite we’d invariably forget something.

So we made sure our shirt had our submarine inginia and name tag attached, and that our tie and cap were included…The big news is two new items will be making their debut: our new Legion tie clip and our new post cap…We didn’t really need a new blue cap – as they’re known in the Legion – but we wanted one that had “Past Commander” embroidered on the side, and that will be unveiled today…

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1330 Sunday until 2130 Sunday…8.0 hours for the day, a solid start to the sleep week.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.

Coming soon! Gaylon’s books in actual book form!
