In 2013 – A portion of a bridge above the Skagit River in Mt Vernon, Washington, collapses, killing nobody but injuring three whose cars fell into the river. An investigation showed the collapse had been caused by an oversize load striking overhead supports. A temporary bridge was in place within a month and new permanent bridge was opened in December. The bridge had been built in 1955 and Mt Vernon is about 90 miles north of Seattle.
In 1890 – The New York Giants establish a new National League record for most stolen bases in a game in 17-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. The Giants stole 17 bases, research into whose record they broke was inconclusive, and the record still stands. The teams combined for 20 stolen bases, also a National League record that still stands. The major league record is 19 for one team and 21 total, done by the Philadelphia Athletics in a game against the Syracuse Stars in an American Association game the previous April.
In 1961 – Ernie K Doe is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Mother-in-Law. It was the first of five chart singles for Doe and remains his only top 40 hit. The song was also in its fifth and final consecutive week at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, Doe’s first of four hits on the soul chart. The song was written by Allen Toussaint, who also wrote Glen Campbell’s pop and country #1 Southern Nights, making Toussaint one of the few songwriters to write #1 songs for Billboard’s pop, soul, and country charts.
