In 1314 – Scottish troops led by King Robert the Bruce defeat English troops led by King Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn in central Scotland during the First War of Scottish Independence. Despite the win, and a later victory at Berwick, Edward II did not renounce his claim to Scotland and the war did not end until Edward II was replaced by his son Edward III in 1328. England was so intent on Scottish independence that the Second War of Scottish Independence was fought from 1332-57.
In 1895 – Roger Connor of the St Louis Browns establishes a new major league record for most career home runs in a 9-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Connor’s home run in the bottom of the first was the 123rd of his career, breaking the record of 122 established by Harry Stovey from 1880-93…Connor retired in 1897 with 138 home runs, a mark broken by Babe Ruth in 1921 and now held by Barry Bonds. Connor also retired as the all-time leader in triples.
In 1979 – Anita Ward is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the second of five consecutive weeks with Ring My Bell. The song went to #1 pop in five other countries, including Norway and Great Britain, later spent two weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, and was Billboard’s 2nd-biggest soul song and 9th-biggest pop song of 1979. It was the first of two chart singles for Ward and remains her only Top 40 pop and soul hit.
Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.
I have never been truly accustomed to civil society, where all is worry, obligation, duty, and where my natural independence renders me always incapable of the subjections necessary to whoever wishes to live among men.
