In 1776 – Continental Army soldier (rank unknown) and member of General Washington’s protection detail Thomas Hickey is executed for treason in New York City. The death warrant signed by Washington said Hickey had been convicted of …”mutiny and sedition, and also of holding a treacherous correspondence with the enemies of said Colonies…”. Hickey had originally fought for the British Army, but joined the American cause when the Revolution broke out.
In 1970 – The Pittsburgh Pirates win the final two games at Forbes Field, defeating the Chicago Cubs 3-2 and 4-1. The stadium opened on June 30, 1909, with a 3-2 loss to the Cubs, and over the years, it hosted 4,760 regular-season Pirates games. The Pirates would move into Three Rivers Stadium on July 16 and have played at PNC Park since 2001. Known for its spacious outfield, the Pirates hit 5,381 triples at Forbes Field, compared to 3,285 on the road during that same period. The Pittsburgh Steelers played there from 1933-63.
In 1980 – Paul McCartney and Wings is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Coming Up. The song had two versions: a studio version and a live version, both of which were included on the single in the US and both received airplay. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #2 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 7th-biggest song of the year. McCartney wrote and produced the song, and played all the instruments on the studio version and was his sixth and final #1 with Wings.
