In 1776 – The United States of America is formed when the 2nd Continental Congress of the United Colonies declares its independence from Great Britain. The Congress passed the Lee Resolution, which had been introduced on June 7 and declared the colonies “are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States…”. The Declaration of Independence had been delivered to Congress on June 28 and was approved two days later.
In 1902 – Muriel Robb of Great Britain wins the Wimbledon championship, defeating Charlotte Cooper Sterry 7-5, 6-1, a day after the first match had been called because of rain at 6-4, 11-13. It was the only Wimbledon title for Robb and was the fourth of six runner-up finishes for Cooper, to go along with five championships, with the eleven finals appearances a then-record now held by Roger Federer and Martina Navratilova, who each have twelve. The match remains the only Wimbledon championship match to be played twice over.
In 2005 – Carrie Underwood is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Inside Your Heaven. It was the first of 23 Top 40 and four Top 10 hits for Underwood, and remains her only #1. The song also went to #1 in Canada and at #52 on Billboard’s country chart. A version by Bo Bice would peak at #2 the following week.
