CAPSULE RESTAURANT REVIEW: Waffle House, Fort Collins, Colorado: Regular readers of this crap know two things: that we enjoy Waffle House and that we seldom get there, the company rejecting my instructions to put one in the small town where I live. We were in Waffle House territory recently, though, and we got there twice.

Dry, Technical Matter: Staffing varied. For our middle-of-the-night Saturday morning visit, they were well-staffed, with the usual Waffle House collection of older folks playing out the string and younger folks still waiting to have their dreams squashed.

Fly In The Ointment: For the Sunday morning visit, though, they only had two people. Dishes were stacked up and service was slow, even with only two other tables occupied. Compounding matters was the fact the server was a tad slow mentally, so everything took a bit longer, though we demand it be noted the young man was thoughtful and efficient. He merely wasn’t all that fast.

Shocker!: We tend to get the same thing every visit: a sausage melt on Texas toast, their famous, wonderful hash browns smothered and covered (cheese and onions), plus a waffle, and we’re hoity toity enough now to insist the waffle come after we’ve finished with our sandwich…Ideally, this is immediately after finishing our opening course, but we’re not pompous enough to demand it.

Final Rating: 1 – Waffle House is one of those instances where either you get it or you don’t. If it’s not to your taste, fair enough, rot in hell and go have your lousy meal someplace else. But for those of us who do like it, every visit is a treat. It’s a wonderful slice of Americana.

In 1582 – The Gregorian calendar – mandated by Pope Gregory XIII – takes effect in present day Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Poland, replacing the Julian calendar, with Oct 4 followed by Oct 15. The Julian calendar’s calculation of a year being 365 days, 6 hours long was off by about eleven minutes and over the centuries the calendar had fallen out of step with the seasons. Due to a variety of factors, including the precession of the Earth’s axis and its slowing rotation, the Gregorian calendar is still off by approximately 27 seconds every year.

In 1906 – The Chicago Cubs establish a new major league record for highest winning percentage in a season in a 4-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs finished the season with a .763 (116-36) winning percentage, breaking the mark of .693 (106-47) established by the 1904 New York Giants and the record still stands. The 116 wins also established a major league record for wins – later tied by the 2001 Seattle Mariners – that still stands. The Cubs lost the World Series to the Chicago White Sox in six games.

In 1980 – Queen is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Another One Bites the Dust. It was the seventh of ten Top 40 hits for the group, their fourth and final Top 10 hit and their second and final #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada, Israel, and Spain, peaked at #7 in Great Britain, and due to charting in both the 1980 and 1981 survey periods, was Billboard’s 65th-biggest hit of 1981. Queen’s album The Game was in its third of five weeks at #1 on Billboard’s album chart.

Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There is never a democracy that did not commit suicide.
