In 1990 – An art gallery in Boston has twelve valuable paintings stolen. Two thieves disguised as police officers entered the museum, tied the guards up, and took 81 minutes to complete their theft. The paintings were initially valued at $200 million, a figure that has since been raised considerably. Though the Boston Mafia was investigated at length, the case remains unsolved, with no arrests made and no paintings recovered. It remains the largest art theft in US history.
In 1953 – The Indiana Hoosiers win the NCAA basketball title, defeating the Kansas Jayhawks 69-68 at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City. It was the second of five national titles for the Hoosiers, and the second of an NCAA-record six second-place finishes for Kansas, to go along with four championships. Washington defeated LSU 88-69 in the third-place game.
In 1972 – Neil Young is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Heart of Gold. It was the first of two Top 40 hits for Young, who had previously charted with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, and remains his only Top 10 hit. The song also went to #1 in his native Canada, peaked at #10 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 17th-biggest song of the year. The song features backing vocals by Linda Ronstadt and Jame Taylor.
