In 1775 – Patrick Henry utters his famous “give me liberty or give death” line in a speech given at the Second Virginia Convention at St John’s Church in Richmond, Virginia. Henry’s speech is credited with influencing the convention to approve sending Virginian troops for service in the Revolutionary War, and Henry would later serve as Virginia’s first and sixth governor of. He would later turn down an offer from President John Adams to be ambassador to France and died in 1799.
In 1979 – Larry Holmes retains his WBC heavyweight title, defeating Ossie Ocasio of Puerto Rico with a seventh round TKO at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas. It was the second defense for Holmes, who won the title from Ken Norton in 1978. Holmes vacated his WBC title in 1983, and was later awarded the inaugural IBF title, a title he lost in 1985. Ocasio would later go on to hold the WBA cruiserweight title.
In 1974 – Barbra Streisand is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the second and final week with The Way We Were. It was the eleventh of 32 Top 10 albums for Streisand and her second of eleven #1 albums. The album also peaked at #3 in Canada, at #49 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 50th-biggest album of the year. Earlier in the year, the title track spent three weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 and was Billboard’s #1 song of the year.
