In 1998 – Theodore Kaczynski, known as the Unabomber, is sentenced to four life sentences plus 30 years by a federal judge in Sacramento. Kaczynski had pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree murder, plus assorted charges of transporting, using, and mailing bombs. Kaczynski had been arrested after his brother recognized his writing style in a manifesto published in a newspaper and contacted authorities. He died in prison in 2023.

In 1965 – Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants establishes a new National League record for most career home runs in a 9-2 win over the St Louis Cardinals. Mays’ first-inning home run was the 512th of his career, breaking the record established by Mel Ott from 1926-27. Mays retire3d in 1973 with 660 home runs, and the record, both National League and all-time, is now held by Barry Bonds with 762. Ott’s total is now good for 25th on the all-time list.

In 1974 – Grand Funk is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with The Loco-Motion. It was the second of four Top 10 hits for the group, and their second and final #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada and was Billboard’s 6th-biggest song of the year. In 1962, Little Eva went #1 with the song, making it the second of nine songs to go to #1 by different artists.
