In 1945 – Germany surrenders unconditionally to the Allies, ending World War II in Europe in Berlin. The instrument was signed for Germany by Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel, who would be executed in October 1946 following the Nuremberg trials. The day before, the Germans had signed a surrender document, but that one was not recognized by the Soviet Union.
In 1970 – The New York Knicks win the NBA title, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers 113-91 to win the series four games to three. It was the first of two NBA titles for the Knicks and the eighth of an NBA-record 15 runner-up finishes for the Lakers, to go along with 17 titles. They were the first NBA Finals to be televised nationwide in full, and Willis Reed of the Knicks was named MVP of the series.
In 1993 – Silk is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Freak Me. It was the second of eight chart singles for the group, their first of three Top 40 hits, and remains their only Top 10 hit. The song peaked at #46 in Great Britian, had spent eight consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B singles chart, and was Billboard’s 5th-biggest song of the year.
