The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Congressional Republicans Both House and Senate starting to show some spine in not bringing some of President Trump’s initiatives to a vote…Finally…A hundred years from now all new people will wonder why this lying, ignorant man, a convicted felon and admitted sexual predator of zero moral and intellectual substance was ever appeased in the first place.

2. World Cup Expansion Quadrennial soccer tournament with the most teams and the most matches played in the most countries ever gets underway next month…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” no one outside of FIFA accountants were asking for more teams – none of whom will make it out of pool play – but hefty prices for everything ensure the fans will be straffed for every last possible dollar.

3. Gaylon For Congress…Vote Early, Vote Often The 3-hole staple…Media Director finding that pretty AI models with professional, well-modulated voices get the most responses, including one malcontent so thrilled with campaign who posted a meme consisting of pair of jockey shorts with skid mark…Campaign cell phone makes debut, too: 970/815-1187.

4. Enhanced Games Games featuring athletes on whatever performance enhancers won’t kill them takes place today in Las Vegas…They’re generally being ignored, but Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters wondering how many world records will be broken – and unacknowledged – and are wondering what the difference is between this and any recent Olympics could be.

In 1883 – The Brooklyn Bridge, connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn, opens, the first fixed crossing of the East River. It took 14 years to build, has a span of 1,595 feet, and is 276 feet high. Approximately 1,800 vehicles and 150,000 people crossed the bridge that first day, and the bridge now has daily traffic of roughly 105,000 cars. The Brooklyn Bridge was the world’s first steel-wire suspension bridge and was capable of elevated train traffic until 1944 and streetcar traffic until 1950.

In 1980 – The New York Islanders win their first Stanley Cup, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4 in overtime in game six at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The winning goal was scored by Bob Nystrom at the 7:11 mark, and this was the first of four consecutive Stanley Cup titles for the Islanders and was the second of six losses in the finals for the Flyers. The game was televised by CBS, the last NHL game on American network television until the 1990 All-Star Game aired on NBC.

In 1980 – Dolly Parton is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Starting Over Again. The song also went #2 country in Canada, peaked at #36 on the Hot 100, and was Parton’s eleventh of 24 #1 country songs. In 1996, a version by Reba McEntire peaked at #19 on the country chart and the song was co-written by Donna Summer and her husband Bruce Sudano of the group Brooklyn Dreams.
