AND THE WAR ROLLS ON: We are still at war with Iran, though actual bombing is paused as a diplomatic solution is sought. This is hardly a bulletin because this war has been started and ended on numerous occasions.
LOL: This led more than one wag to opine that President Donald Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for ending the same war multiple times, a line funny enough for us to wish we would have thought of it ourselves
Stop Us If You’ve Heard This Before: This war remains illegal, immoral, and stupid. Illegal because it was not declared by Congress, though this does not seem to be bothering Congress too much. It is immoral because we’ve bombed school children, though this does not seem to be bothering you and me – we the people – too much. It is stupid because we are fighting to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which was open before the war, something else that few are getting worked up over.
FunFact: Congress last declared war – as mandated in the Constitution – in 1942. Every other war we’ve fought since then has been illegal.
Dry, Technical Matter: This war is hardly a surprise, though. Donald Trump is an ignorant liar, and a man of zero moral or intellectual substance, and America is governed accordingly.
The Bottom Line: America has been at war every day for 38 years, meaning two generations – soon to be three – of Americans have never known their country at peace. And by our calculations, we have spent 206 of our 250 years of independence at war. We deserve better than perpetual war and the ignorance of Donald Trump, but we’re not demanding that right now. When we do demand peace and common sense, the American ship will be righted

In 1782 – General George Washington orders the creation of the US military’s first decoration, the Order of Military Merit. It was issued for “unusual gallantry” and “extraordinary fidelity” and “essential services”. The award fell into disuse after the Revolution and was recommissioned in 1932 as the Purple Heart. The Order was the second military award in History, following Russian’s Order of St George in 1769.
In 1903 – Tommy Corcoran of the Cincinnati Reds establishes a new major league record for most assists in a game by a shortstop in a 4-2 win over the St Louis Cardinals. Corcoran had 14 assists, research into whose record he broke was inconclusive, and the record still stands. The extra-inning record is 15, by Lave Cross of the Philadelphia Phillies in 1897 and Rick Burleson of the Boston Red Sox in 1982.
In 1976 – Elton John and Kiki Dee are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of four consecutive weeks with Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. The song went to #1 in seven other countries, including South Africa, Rhodesia, and Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 2nd-biggest song of the year. It was the fifth of eight #1 songs for John and remains the only #1 song for Dee. The song was written by John and Bernie Taupin, under the pen names Ann Orson and Carte Blanche.
