Notes From Around Our Human Experience

HUT, HUT, HIKE: Recently Jed York, the owner of the San Francisco 49ers football team, got caught up in a sting operation and was arrested for solicitation in a rural Ohio trailer park. He texted someone he thought was a vendor willing and able to provide some Sunday morning nookie, and they agreed on a $160 fee.

Fly In The Ointment: Unfortunately, he was not talking with a professional sex vendor, but with the local constables. Our first thought was “the guy’s rich, and he’s paying $160 for a trailer park hookup”?

Quote That Sucker: Well, as someone smarter than us once said sex, like hunger, is an appetite, and you don’t always eat the finest restaurants. Sometimes you slum, and happily, too.

My Partner’s Bill Gannon…My Name’s Friday: Our second thought was, “why is this still a crime”?…Good gravy, an old fart wants a piece, and he finds someone to sell it to him. So what? Where’s the crime here? A better question is: who’s the victim here? Because you cannot have a crime without a victim. Is the woman receiving money she probably really needs the victim, or is the man paying her the victim?

FunFact: Besides, we all pay for it, don’t we guys? The only question is whether it’s a direct cash grant or whether we buy them dinner first.

The Bottom Line: Morality laws don’t do anyone any good, and it is time to repeal them. If paying for sex or legal weed isn’t to your taste, that’s all right, they’re not to my taste, either, but just because something is legal does not make it mandatory. What consenting adults want to do behind closed doors is their lookout, and nobody else’s. Jed York’s actions this past Sunday should never have made news.

Security 101 dictates it’s not completely bad to have an officer present in this situation, and it’s one of those deals where we would rather be told we don’t have to do something than be told we should’ve done something…

In 1957 – South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond begins a speech to the United States Senate at 8:54 pm against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. The address turned into a 24 hour, 18 minute filibuster, which Thurmond stopped the following night due to doctors concerns about his kidneys. It was then the longest filibuster in US Senate history, and is now the second. Despite Thurmond’s opposition, the bill later passed the Senate by a 60-15 margin and was signed into law by President Eisenhower on September 9.

In 2004 – Argentina and the United States win basketball gold medals at the Athens Summer Olympics. Argentina defeated Italy 84-69 for the men’s gold medal while the US defeated Australia  74-63 for the women’s gold medal. It remains the only men’s basketball gold medal for Argentina and was the fifth of ten gold medals for the US women’s team.

In 1976 – KC and the Sunshine Band is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the only week with (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty. It was the third of four #1 soul singles for the group and their third of seven soul Top 10 hits. The song also went #1 pop in Canada and later would spend a week at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. It was Billboard’s fourth-biggest soul song of the year and its 26th biggest overall.
