Notes From Around Our Human Experience

HUT, HUT, HIKE: Louisiana State University (LSU) has announced it has dropped all plans to put two players who went to NFL training camps this summer on their roster. The SEC, along with other conferences, had prohibited this and, of course, the issue ended up in court, with a Louisiana court siding with LSU – a shocker, we know. But then the SEC started making noises about kicking LSU out, and LSU – in another upset – complied.

Dry, Technical Matter: In a court filing, the SEC had the gall to say:

….the consensus of the CEOs was and continues to be that LSU’s continued membership in the Conference would be inconsistent with the publicly stated values and principles of the Conference

LOL: Stated values? Principles? In college sports? Good gravy, the illusion never ends, because the only shared value is money. Every element – players, coaches, teams, conferences, and networks – is in it solely for every last possible dollar. That’s it; there is no common goal.

Get Your Official Daily Dose Policy Right Here…Again: We’ve talked about this before: we say let players with collegiate eligibility left who have not appeared in a regular-season professional game back in. The 16 SEC schools have combined payrolls of, more or less, $500 million, so essentially they are fielding professional teams, and it is reasonable to let those who gave the NFL or NBA a shot back in when they don’t make it.

The Bottom Line: As long as there is money to be made, meaning as long as we fans continue to foot the bill, this nonsense will continue. A 32-team playoff that begins Thanksgiving weekend and ends on New Year’s Day would become an American classic quicker than you can say “NIL”, but until someone shows them how to make more money than they are making now with it, it won’t happen.

We’re standing there looking at it and we are both puzzled because you don’t have to be the Culligan Man to wonder exactly where in the hell standing water on the first floor of the hotel comes from…

In 1948 – Kim Il Sung is appointed premier of North Korea by the Soviet Union. Kim, born in Japanese-occupied Korea, had been in exile in the Soviet Union and was a captain in the Red Army when he returned to Korea in 1945. The Soviet Union began administering North Korea in 1945 and had established a communist republic in July. Kim ruled until his death at 82 in 1994; his son Kim Jon Il succeeded him, and his grandson Kim Jong Un has ruled since 2011.

In 1960 – The Denver Broncos defeat the Boston Patriots 13-10 at Boston’s Nickerson Field in the American Football League’s first game. The AFL had several new rules, including having the scoreboard clock be the official time, the 2-point conversion, and a 14-game season, which the NFL adopted in 1961. The AFL merged with the NFL after the 1970 season, with the New England Patriots, New York Jets, Los Angeles Chargers, Buffalo Bills, and Denver Broncos still in their original cities/territories. The Houston Oilers defeated the Chargers 24-16 in the first AFL championship game.

In 1989 – The New Kids on the Block are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Hangin’ Tough. It was the fourth of eleven Top 40 hits for the group, their fourth of nine Top 10 hits, and their second of three #1s. The song also went to #1 in Ireland, Luxembourg, and Great Britain, and was from the album of the same name, which was in its first of two weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
