In 1965 – Margaret Court wins the US Open tennis tournament, defeating Billie Jean King 8-6, 7-5, at the West Side Tennis Club, Forest Hills, New York City. It was the second of five US Open titles for Court and the twelfth of 24 major titles, and was the first of two runner-up finishes for King, to go along with four titles. Court also won the mixed doubles title with Fred Stolle, her 33rd of 64 overall Grand Slam titles, the all-time record.
In 1960 – Cowboy Copas is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot C&W Sides chart – for the fourth of twelve consecutive weeks with Alabam. It was his eighth of nine Top 10 country hits for Copas and remains his only #1. The song also peaked at #63 on the Hot 100, and was Billboard’s 3rd-biggest country song of the year. It was the fourth of five #1 country songs that year, the second-lowest total ever on a major Billboard singles chart, with the record being four #1s on the 1954 Billboard country chart.
