Notes From Around Our Human Experience

USA! USA!: On Wednesday, the state of Tennessee attempted to execute a convicted murderer named Christa Pike. Now 50, Pike had been convicted and sentenced to death when she was 18.

Fly In The Ointment: Pike, however, survived her execution! Twice! We are not making that up.

Dry, Technical Matter: When the first lethal injection attempt failed, the state tried the second injection site. When this, too, failed, the state threw up its hands and sent her to the hospital, marking one of the few times someone enters a death chamber and is taken out alive. So what happens now?

Get Your Official Daily Dose Policy Right Here: Provided she survives this, Pike should go free. She served her sentence. Sentenced to death, the state of Tennessee executed Ms Pike’s death warrant. It led her into the death chamber, strapped her to a gurney, found two veins, and twice injected her with the state-mandated dose of the state-mandated drug. She survived. Like any prisoner who has completed their sentence, she should be set free.

The Bottom Line: Not only do we occasionally execute the innocent, but now we can’t even execute the guilty. The condemned have few rights, but one of them is having their death sentence executed efficiently, humanely, and competently. If the state is no longer able to grant this right, this is another reason – along with having executed the innocent – for the death penalty to be abolished.

In  1962 – James Meredith, escorted by federal marshals, becomes the first Black to attend the University of Mississippi. The attendant rioting killed two people and injured over 300, including over 150 US Marshals. Meredith, an Air Force veteran, had previously attended Jackson State and graduated from Ole Miss the following year with a political science degree, and he later earned a law degree from Columbia. Now 93, Meredith lives in Jackson, Mississippi.

In 1922 – Rogers Hornsby of the St Louis Cardinals becomes the first player in major league history to finish a season with a .400 batting average and 40 home runs. Hornsby went 3-5 in a 7-1 win over the Chicago Cubs, to finish the season batting .401 with 42 home runs. It was the first of three times Hornsby would hit .400 and remains his only season with 40 home runs. The feat has not been duplicated.

In 1977 – Meco is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band. It was the first of 20 chart singles for Meco, his first of five Top 40 hits, and remains his only Top 10 hit. The song also peaked at #7 in Great Britain, at #6 on Billboard’s Disco chart, at #8 on its Soul chart, and was Billboard’s 71st-biggest song of the year. Meco’s real name was Domenico Monardo, he graduated from the US Military Academy and died at 83 in 2023.

Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

Nothing could be more insulting to me than the concept of civil rights. It means perpetual second-class citizenship for me and my kind.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
