Notes From Around Our Human Experience

FROM THE DEATH PENALTY DESK: We continue to maintain that Christa Pike – the gal who survived Tennessee’s attempt to kill her – has served her sentence. It seems logical to us that if a state wheels you into a death chamber and tries to kill you, that your death warrant has been executed and your sentence has been served. Whether you’re wheeled out of the death chamber dead or alive is of no consequence.

Fly In The Ointment: Let’s say some logic takes hold and Ms Pike is adjudged to have served her death sentence, even though she is still alive. Some research on our part showed she still has two 25-year sentences to serve: one for conspiracy in the murder she was convicted of, and one for an incident in prison where she tried to strangle another inmate with, of all things, a shoestring. These sentences did not run concurrently with her time on death row, and they would be served consecutively, so her hospital room is as likely to be as free as she ever gets.

THIS JUST IN: Then it was announced this week that the execution of Nidal Hasan, the US Army major who massacred 13 people at Fort Hood in Texas in 2014, will have his death sentence carried out in December. His appeals have been exhausted, and a final petition was dismissed this past spring.

FunFact: It would be the first military execution since the Army executed John Arthur Bennett for rape in 1961.

Dry, Technical Matter: The government announced that Hasan will be executed by a good old-fashioned US Army firing squad, which should negate any chance of Hasan surviving.

We Are Not Making This Up: The government also announced that Hasan’s execution will not only be public, but livestreamed to boot!

We’re Better Than This, Aren’t We?: Part of us says this is barbaric, that only North Korea and Iran still hold public executions, a civilized society does not livestream them, and what in the hell are we thinking?

No, I Guess We’re Not: Then part of me admits we’d probably watch, if it didn’t disrupt our sleep schedule too much…A lot of others would, too.

The Bottom Line: The death penalty – a human staple since time immemorial – has become a complete fiasco here in America. We’ve executed innocent people, we can’t even properly execute death warrants anymore, and now we want to livestream a firing squad. America should’ve evolved past the death penalty ages ago, and we should be ashamed of ourselves.

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In  1846 – English astronomer William Lassell discovers Triton, the first moon of Neptune. Triton is a bit smaller than our Moon. It is thought to have once been a planet in the Kuiper Belt, and is the only moon in the Solar System that rotates in the opposite direction of its host, known as a retrograde orbit. Neptune itself had been discovered a couple of weeks earlier, though Galileo had observed it in the 17th century and mistook it for a star.

In 1904 – The Boston Americans establish a new major league record for most complete games in a season in a 1-0 loss to the New York Highlanders in the second game a doubleheader. Bill Dineen threw the Americans’ 148th complete game of the season, breaking the record of 147, which had been done twice in the 19th century. The Americans had only nine relief appearances and one save on the season, and the record still stands. A win in the first game gave the Americans the American League pennant, though the National League champion New York Giants declined to play them in the World Series.

In 1987 – Michael Jackson is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the third of six consecutive weeks with Bad. The album went to #1 in 14 other countries, including Finland, Norway, and Great Britain; peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Black Albums chart; and, because of when it charted, was Billboard’s 5th-biggest album of 1988. It was Jackson’s second of six #1 albums and produced a record five #1 singles, a mark later tied by Katy Perry.

Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

Always you have to contend with the stupidity of men…Halve your lecture, and put a psalm at the beginning and a prayer at the end of it and read it from a pulpit, and they will pronounce it good without thinking.
