The Diary of a Nobody/January 24

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, January 24
More snow, with another foot-and-a-half falling at The Shire last night…Recall last week we got 2-3 feet and moving all of it was a team effort with The Wife, however this week I am pleased to report I was spared snow removal duties.

When I woke up around 0830 The Wife happened to be geared up ready to go and soon enough she had the snow blower going and a few minutes after that she came in looking for my car keys so she could move my car because our neighbor Jerry, who was nowhere to be found after last week’s blizzard, had gotten off his ass and reported for duty with his tractor and in fairly short order our driveway looked pretty good.

Afterward, I asked Jerry about his house and he shook his head and violated the Second Commandment by using the name of God’s only begotten Son in a manner inconsistent with praise, saying he’s only had one offer on the house and it was for 299, less than the 325 he’ asking and apparently holding firm at, because he turned that offer down…Eventually, he said, he wants to move to California, where even 325 won’t get him much more than a storage shed.

Actually, I did move some snow today, from the carport roof…The snow was recent so it was pretty easy to move and the implement is twelve feet long so you are able to get most of it off, too.

The Wife then went to the next county to help Patty (from the retailer and the one who gave us the ground mountain lion last year that was really tasty) take her dogs to the vet and then do chick-type stuff and while she was gone I ate like crap…First I made two sandwiches with some canned chicken that was in the pantry…This really wasn’t too bad, actually…Well, two sandwiches may have been a bit much, but I’m a growing boy and while it might not otherwise be featured on the Health Network, it was all right.

Ol’ Sparrow was not content with that, tho…There was some shredded cheddar cheese and chopped up bacon sitting in the frig and rather than allow The Wife to fret over which future dishes to use these with I put both on a plate, microwaved them enough to melt the cheese a bit and made yet another sandwich…Looking back, it was a bit much.

Came back strong with a healthy dinner, tho….The Wife had picked up a couple of chickens in the next county and she stuffed some veggies in them and then baked them…For a side dish, she made mashed sweet potatoes.

Unlike hotcakes, where The Wife prefers to make 100 the size of a dime while I like two big ones, we are very chicken compatible: she prefers white meat, which is too dry for my taste, which is why I like dark meat…We combined to eat about half of one chicken, so we have a chicken-and-a-half for the rest of the week.

Despite today’s gorge-fest, I am going to have a dilemma here soon…I am continuing to get smaller and I am already at the last notch on my belt and in a month or so I might well need another notch…Get a new belt, you say…Well, sure, that is the logical solution to the problem, but here’s the deal: I’ve had this belt a long time, over 15 years and it’s a Red Wing so it’s the highest quality and is showing no signs of slowing down…It still looks sharp and should provide trusty service holding up my pants for another 15 years…So I think I will look into adding another hole to it…I really like it and don’t really want a new one.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 2330 Wednesday until 0830 Thursday…9.0 hours, 35 for the week, leaving us 15 to get in the final two sleep periods of the week to the magic 50 hour mark.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
