The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow reports the robins haven’t returned to nest at The Shire. Today’s Diary.

Recall they make their nests on the electrical meter right next to the kitchen door, which is on the carport and is used for everyday access to the cabin…This isn’t a problem at first, but once the little ones hatch, Mom and Dad robin are stalwart sentries (SS), and those keeping score at home will recall anyone approaching the kitchen door got dive bombed…

In 2017 – The Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus performs their final show, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, the final acts an equestrian number, followed by a skit and a group performance. The Ringling Brothers first performed in 1884 in Baraboo, Wisconsin, while the Bailey family traces their circus roots back to 1806, and the companies merged in 1919…The first circus in the US – the idea was imported from Great Britain – was performed in 1793.

1981 – The New York Islanders win the Stanley Cup, defeating the Minnesota North Stars 5-1 in Game 5 of the FInals in Uniondale, New York. It was the second of four Stanley Cup wins – all consecutive – for the Islanders and the first of two runner-up finishes for the North Stars to go with one title after their move to Dallas. The Islanders had defeated the New York Rangers in four games in the semifinals and the North Stars had defeated Calgary in six games in the other semifinal.

In 1977 – Stevie Wonder is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Sir Duke. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #2 in Great Britain, spent a week at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 18th-biggest song of the year. The song is a tribute to Duke Ellington and also mentions Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald. It was the fifth of nine #1 pop songs for Wonder and his 13th of 19 #1 soul songs.

The large masses in politics act pretty much as they do in religion. Every doctrine…is a matter of faith…on account of their trust in the apostle.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow strongly suspects a coworker of violating the 2nd Commandment in Spanish. Today’s Diary.

He is stunned and mutters something that wasn’t immediately translatable into English but did sound like it invoked a Supreme Being and not in a manner consistent with praise, either.

In 1875 – The meter is established as an international standard of measure when 17 nations, including the US – sign the rather dull Meter Treaty in Paris. The actual distance of the meter didn’t change – it was still based on a platinum bar standard established in 1799 – and today is based on the length light travels in a vacuum. The meter was first defined after the French Revolution as “one ten-millionth of the shortest distance from the North Pole to the equator passing through Paris”.

In 1978 – Affirmed, ridden by Steve Cauthen, wins the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse in Baltimore, defeating Alydar by a nose. Earlier, Affirmed won the Kentucky Derby and would later win the Belmont to become the eleventh Triple Crown winner. These remain the only Triple Crown race wins for Cauthen, who later rode in Europe for many years.

In 2006 – Tool is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the only week with 10,000 Days. It was the third of six chart albums for the group and their second of three #1s. The album went to #1 in ten other countries, including Greece and Norway, peaked at #4 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 31st-biggest album of the year. It produced three singles, including The Pot, which spent four weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.

In 715 – Pope Gregory II is elected, following the death of Constantine in April. Born Gregorius Sabellous in Rome, had been head Vatican Library and served as secretary of state under Constantine. History primarily remembers Gregory for his defiance of Byzantine emperor Leo III, which lead to secular and politcal authority and power for the papacy.

In 2013 – Sweden wins the world ice hockey championship, defeating Switzerland 5-1 in the gold medal game in Stockholm. It was the ninth of eleven world championships for Sweden and the second of three runner-up finishes for Switzerland, to go along with four relegation-level world titles. The US finished third, defeating Finland 3-2 in the bronze medal game.

In 1973 – The Independents are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the only week with Leaving Me. It was the fourth of eight should hits for the group, their second of four Top 10s and remains their only appearance at #1 on a Billboard chart. The song also peaked at #21 on the Hot 100, their only pop hit. The song spent seven weeks in the Top 10 and 13 weeks on the soul chart, which back then had 50 positions.

The Diary of a Nobody/May 18

It is Read Free Sunday at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, May 18
Busy tonite at the hotel…We were sold out for the first time in a while and there were arrivals and sundry stand sales and both the Front Desk Supervisor (FDS) and ol’ Sparrow ended up delivering towels because the demand had been so great the extras in the back office had all been issued…There was a tedious woman who kept showing up and topping it all off was a couple who would’ve really preferred ol’ Sparrow was a bartender and not superintending a hotel front desk.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow mows the lawn, but the battery dies toward the end. Today’s Diary.

The middle setting for a high lawn meant the mower had to work extra hard and she threw in the towel about three-quarters of the way thru…The delay was 45 minutes, not too bad but certainly enuff time to ensure ol’ Sparrow totally stiffened up and finishing up was completely misery…

In 1896 – The US Supreme Court, in a 7-1 decision, rules in Plessy v. Ferguson that the separate but equal legal doctrine is constitutional, legalizing Jim Crow laws in the South.  The case began in 1892 when Homer Plessey, a mixed-race man, boarded a whites-only train car in New Orleans in violation of Louisiana’s Separate Car Act. The lone dissenting opinion was issued by Justice John Harlan, who dissented many times in civil liberty cases during his time on the court.

In 1897 – Bill Joyce of the New York Giants ties the major league record for most triples in a game in an 11-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Joyce had four triples, tying the record established by George Strief of the Philadelphia Athletics in the American Association in 1885 and the feat remains unmatched. The modern major league record for most triples in a game is three, done many times.

In 1959 – Wilbert Harrison is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Kansas City. The song spent eight weeks in the Top 10 and 16 weeks on the chart, was Billboard’s 7th-biggest song of the year, and was in its second of seven consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. It was the first chart single for Harrison, his first of two Top 40 hits, and remains his only #1 song.
