In 1987 – The USS Stark, – a guided missile frigate – is attacked in the Persian Gulf when an Iraqi fighter jet fired two missiles into her. The aircraft ignored warnings from the Stark to identify itself and fired missiles from 22 and 15 miles away. The attack killed 37 sailors and injured 21. Iraq apologized and claimed the pilot thought the Stark was an Iranian freighter. The Stark was repaired in Bahrain before returning to the US.

In 1998 – Se Ri Pak of South Korea wins the LPGA Championship at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Delaware, shooting a final-round 68 to defeat Donna Andrews and Lisa Hackney by three strokes. The album also went to #2 in Australia, and it remains the last Broadway cast album to go to #1 on the Billboard album chart.

Leading Off
Notes from around the human experience.

LEADING OFF: DRY, TECHNICAL MATTER: The centuries are littered with attempts by various peoples to destroy the Jews. So you’d expect Israel to have reacted strongly to Hamas’ October attack. They had every right to, and they’ve been naming the score almost since Day 1.

FunFact: If this war were an athletic event, a mercy rule would’ve been invoked early on, because Israel has been naming the score almost from the start. It has been such a route that you have to wonder what Hamas was thinking. They had to have known, or at least strongly suspected, that Israel would end up handing them their lunch.

Calling A Spade A Spade: This is no longer a war, though. War is comabt designed to gain military and tactical advantages and superiority and Israel gained that weeks ago.

The G Word: Now this war is merely an effort to slaughter as many Palestinians as possible. It is a genocide, which my dictionary defines as:

The deliberate killing of a large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group.

That is exactly what is going on now. We suspect Israel knows this, too, because if anyone knows a genocide when they see one, it’s the Jews because History is littered with attempts to annihilate them.

The Bottom Line: Supporting Israel means supporting their right to exist, it does not mean supporting everything they choose to do. Their war with Hamas is now nothing more than an exercise in killing as many Palestinians as possible. This is genocide and it must be stopped immediately. We’ve said this before It’s possible to condemn genocide and not be anti-Semitic. Israel has killed over 35,000 Palestinians, including no small number of women and children. We Americans share in that total and we have blood on our hands, too.

In 1991 – Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain addresses a joint meeting of Congress. The queen received three standing ovations and and numerous other interruptions during her 12-minute address and Elizabeth remains the only British monarch to address Congress. Various sources refer to the Queen addressing a joint session of Congress, but only the president addresses a joint session. Everyone else, including monarchs, addresses joint meetings.

In 1894 – The home of the Boston Beaneaters – now the Atlanta Braves – burns to the ground following a 10-8 win over the Baltimore Orioles. South End Grounds burned down after a fire started by children playing under the right field bleachers, a fire that destroyed 117 other buildings. The Beaneaters played home games at Congress Street Grounds which had hosted Boston’s major league teams in the Players League and American Association until South End Grounds III opened on July 20.

In 1981 – Ray Parker, Jr. & Raydio is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the first of two consecutive weeks with A Woman Needs Love (Just Like You Do). The song also peaked at #4 on the Hot 100 and went Top 10 pop in Canada, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. It was the seventh of eight Top 40 soul hits for the group and remains their only #1. Parker would later have a #1 pop hit with Ghostbusters.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Tuesday, May 14
The big news is the summer vest made its debut tonite, marking the first time we went to the hotel without a jacket since October…We even wore the summer ranch hat, too…Key here is not so much the temperature when we leave The Shire, but what the temperature is going to be when we leave the hotel…You must dress for the coldest temperature and we’re pretty much wusses here and demand AM temperatures to be above 40° in order to wear the vest and ranch hat…(Actually, over 45° is the preferred temperature, but after a long winter, there is some cabin fever to be dealt with.)…We seem to recall this being a bit late in the season for the vest to be making its debut, but we haven’t been keeping a spreadsheet on this vital matter and we trust/hope you haven’t been, either.

In 1985 – Paul Coffey of the Edmonton Oilers establishes the NHL playoff record for most points in a game by a defenseman in a 10-5 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 5 of the Campbell Conference Finals. Coffey had a goal and five assists for six points to break the record of five done several times previously, including by Coffey on April 20 and the record still stands. The Oilers would defeat the Blackhawks in six games and later defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for the Stanley Cup in five games.

In 2005 – Gwen Stefani is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks with Hollaback Girl. In 1981 – Pope John Paul II is shot in St Peter’s Square in Vatican City by Turk Mehmet Ali Ağca. John Paul was shot twice, in the torso and on his left index finger, and two bystanders were shot and wounded as well. Ağca was captured at the scene and later sentenced by an Italian court to life in prison. In 2000, at John Paul’s request, Ağca was pardoned and deported back to Turkey, where he was imprisoned for murder. He was paroled in 2006 and is still alive.

In 1952 – Ron Necciai of the Bristol Twins (Class D Appalachian League) establishes a professional baseball record for most strikeouts in a game in a 7-0 victory over the Welch Miners. Necciai struck out 27 batters in the game, breaking the record of 25 established by Tommy Lasorda in a 15-inning game in 1948, and the record still stands. An out was recorded on a groundout, obliging Necciai to strike out four batters in the ninth. Necciai was promoted to the Pittsburgh Pirates later in the season, going 1-6 with an ERA of 7.08, in his only major league season.

In 1967 – Martha & the Vandellas are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart for the only week with Jimmy Mack. It was the ninth of ten Top 10 soul hits for the group and their second and final #1, and the song also peaked at #10 on the Hot 100 and at #21 in Great Britain. The group had recorded the song in 1964, though Motown Records chose not to release it because they felt it sounded too much like Supremes record.
