In 1914 – The Ford Motor Company announces the implementation of a eight-hour workday and doubles wages to $5 a day, about $150 in today’s money. The move was not popular with rivals, though when it resulted in increased productivity and profits for Ford, most followed suit. The first eight-hour day in the US had been won by Boston ship carpenters in 1842 and the first eight-hour day had been implemented by King Phillip II of Spain in 1594.
In 1971 – The Harlem Globetrotters 2,495 game winning streak comes to an end in a 100-99 loss to the New Jersey Reds (one of the names played under by the Washington Generals) in Martin, Tennessee. The Reds led by twelve with two minutes left before the Globetrotters realized what was happening and they led by one point with ten seconds left. The winning shot was made by Generals owner Red Klotz and Meadowlark Lemon missed a shot as time expired. It was the Globetrotters’ first loss since 1957.
In 1959 – The Chipmunks with David Seville are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the third of four consecutive weeks with The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late). It was the second of three Top 10 hits for the group and their second and final #1. The song won three Grammy Awards: for Best Comedy Performance, Best Children’s Recording and Best Engineered Non-Classical Record. The song also peaked at #5 on Billboard’s soul chart and was the first Christmas song to hit #1 on the Hot 100.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow reports the VA has still lost its mind. Today’s Diary.
Recall last week we discussed the VA requiring voided checks for signing up for direct deposit…hopefully [we’ll] get this nonsense reversed because, as discussed last week, a lot of people don’t have checks anymore…It’s the third decade of the 21st century, after all…

In 1649 – England’s House of Commons votes to put King Charles I on trial for treason. As the House Lords had rejected the measure and it did not have Charles’ assent, the king disputed the court’s jurisdiction. This did not stop them from convicting and condemning him and Charles was beheaded on January 30. The executioner and his assistant wore masks and wigs and their identity was never revealed. England would remain a republic until the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.
In 1984 – Adrian Dantley of the Utah Jazz ties the NBA record for most free throws made in a game in a 116-111 win over the Houston Rockets in Las Vegas. Dantly made 28 free throws – in 29 attempts – to tie the mark established by Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors in March 1962 and the record still stands. Dantley is also second on the list with 27 free throws made in a November 1983 game and finished his NBA career with a career free throw percentage of 81.8%
In 1960 – Marty Robbins is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with El Paso. The song peaked at #19 in Great Britain, was in its third of seven consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s country chart, and won the Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording. It remains Robbins’ only #1 pop hit and was his sixth of 16 #1 country hits in a chart career that spanned from 1952-83.
