The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has the latest MPG figure for the new ride. Today’s Diary.

Regular readers of this crap know this is a full MPG better than last week, tho based on a casual glance at the odometer and the gas gauge, we thought it would be higher.

In 1972 – What would become the Watergate scandal begins when five men, who would turn out to be White House operatives, are arrested for burgling the offices of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate building in Washington, D.C. The scandal stemmed not from the break-in but from the Nixon Administration’s attempts to cover up White House involvement. The scandal culminated with President Richard Nixon’s resignation in August 1974 and the five burglars either pled guilty or were convicted at trial.

In 1943 – Joe Cronin of the Boston Red Sox becomes the first major league player to hit pinch-hit home runs in both games of a doubleheader in a 5-4 win and an 8-7 loss to the Philadelphia Athletics. Cronin, the Boston manager, had a three-run, two-out home run in the seventh inning of the opener and a three-run home run in the eighth inning of the second game. The feat was matched by Hal Breeden of the Montreal Expos in 1973.

In 1972 – Sammy Davis, Jr is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of three consecutive weeks with The Candy Man. It was the eighth Top 40 hit for Davis, his second and final Top 10 hit, and remains his only #1 song. The song spent 21 weeks on the chart, including 16 weeks in the Top 40 and seven weeks in the Top Ten, and was Billboard’s fifth-biggest song of the year. The song earned Davis a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, in 1973.

A man’s life is interesting primarily when he has failed — I well know. For it’s a sign that he tried to surpass himself.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow enjoys a leisurely day off. Today’s Diary.

We were home by 1230, got some laundry going, and were in bed reading by 1300…(It should be noted that we’ve been reading in bed lately, a habit necessity forced on us on vacation and one we’ve been unwilling to let go of.)…This is a wonderful time to be in bed reading on a day off and the cat was so thrilled with it that she came and sat next to me.

The Diary of a Nobody – Hardly for the first time, Sparrow wants to smack a guest. Today’s Diary.

At about 0640 a guest comes to the front desk and advises that some dipwad is blocking his exit from the overflow parking area behind the restaurant…He’s dropping unflattering adjectives, too, and while they weren’t directed at me, we had to resist the urge to advise him that we were not his problem, that we were here to be of service to him, and to pipe the eff down…

In 1648 – Margaret Jones of Charlestown becomes the first woman to be executed in the Massachusetts colony for witchcraft. Jones, a midwife and medical practitioner, had been accused of a variety of crimes, some stemming from when misfortune happened to some who did not take her medicines. An eyewitness to her execution said Jones maintained her innocence throughout. Witch trials in the colonies would continue through the end of the Salem Witch Trials in 1693.

In 1902 – Jay Clark of the Corsicana Oil Citys establishes a professional baseball record for most home runs in a game in a 51-3 win over the Texarkana Casketmakers in a Texas League game. Clark had eight home runs and broke the record of four home runs done nine times previously. Texarkana started their first baseman, the owner’s son, on the mound and the game was played in a facility south of town with a very short right-field fence because Corsicana did not allow baseball on Sundays.

In 1985 – Ricky Skaggs is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Country Boy. It was the ninth of eleven #1 country hits for Skaggs and was his 12th of 16 consecutive Top 10 country hits. The song also went #1 country in Canada and was Billboard’s 43rd-biggest country song of the year. The song was written by members of the British rock band Heads Hands & Feet.

Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

In the city, people paid to hear other people sing and watch other people feel. Passion has become a spectator sport supported by emotional cripples. Love and suffering were knacks possessed by the talented paid to display their gifts.

In 1966 – The US Supreme Court, in a 5-4 vote, rules in Miranda v. Arizona that police must advise suspects of their rights to remain silent and to counsel while in custody. The case began in 1963 when Ernesto Miranda was arrested on suspicion of raping an 18-year-old girl and confessed without being advised of his right to an attorney. Miranda was later convicted of the same crime without his confession, was sentenced to 20-30 years, paroled in 1972, and murdered in a bar fight in 1976.

In 1890 – Ellen Roosevelt win the US National  Tennis Championship – now known as the US Open – defeating two-time defending champion Bertha Townsend 6-2, 6-2. It remains the only major singles title for Roosevelt and she and her sister Grace won the doubles title, the first of three sisters to do so at the US Open. Roosevelt was a cousin of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the 32nd president of the United States.

In 1970 – The Beatles are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the 20th and final time with The Long and Winding Road. The song spent two consecutive weeks at the top and also went to #1 in Canada, though it was not released as a single in Great Britain. The song was originally offered to Tom Jones, who had to decline it because he was contractually obligated to release another song first. The Beatles’ 20 #1 songs remain a Billboard Hot 100 record.
