The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow renews his acquaintance with Phil at a local body shop. Today’s Diary.

Phil, as it turned out, remembered my name, but not my face:

– You know, Phil, I have a beard now…That might be why you didn’t recognize me.
Phil, rather seriously, dismissed me.
– Nah, you’re ugly…I don’t remember ugly.

In 1998 – The US Supreme Court rules unanimously that federal laws banning sexual harassment also apply when the workers are of the same sex. The suit was brought by Joseph Oncale of Louisiana against his employer, Sundowner Offshore Services, where he was employed at a roustabout, who said he was regularly subjected to humiliating actions by the rest of his crew. Previously, both US District Court and Court of Appeals had ruled against Oncale.

In 1967 – Peggy Fleming of the US wins the world figure skating title in Vienna, defeating Gabriele Seyfert of East Germany and Hana Maskova of Czechoslovakia for the gold medal. It was the second of three consecutive world titles for Fleming, who would win the gold medal at the 1968 Grenoble (France) Winter Olympics. The competition remains the last time the world championships were held at an outdoor rink.

In 1978 – Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings are at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the first of four consecutive weeks with Mamas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys. The song remains the only #1 for the duo and was the seventh country #1 for Jennings and the third for Nelson. The song also went #1 country in Canada, peaked at #42 on the Hot 100, and won the Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.

Sprints felt really strong, too, so strong we wouldn’t’ve been surprised if the Chariots of Fire theme had started to play in the background…

In 1776 – The United States Marine Corps conducts its first amphibious landing in the Raid of Nassau in the Bahamas in the American Revolution. The raid was unopposed and American Marines held the port for two weeks as Americans searched for gunpowder and other supplies. The Corps was then known as the Continental Marines and were disbanded after the Revolution and reformed in 1798.

In 1981 – The Edmonton Oilers and the New York Islanders tie the NHL record for the highest score in a tie game in an 8-8 tie played in New York. The teams tied the record established by the Montreal Maroons and the New York Americans on February 18, 1936, and the mark was tied on six other occasions before the NHL ended tie games with the adoption of the hoot-out rule in 2005.

In 1984 – Rockwell is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Black Singles chart – for the first of five consecutive weeks with Somebody’s Watching Me. The song also peaked at #2 on the Hot 100, went #6 pop in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 12th-biggest soul song of the year. Rockwell is the son of Motown Records founder Barry Gordie and the song featured backing vocals by Michael and Jermaine Jackson. It was Rockwell’s first chart single and his first of two pop and soul hits.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow gets a shipment of coffee cups at the hotel. Today’s Diary.

This a classic yay/boo situation, tho: yay for the smaller cups but boo because the cups are paper cups and aren’t insulated and you’re going to burn your hand with anything warmer with iced tea in there…The 12-oz cups, by comparison, are styrofoam and you can enjoy your beverage without losing a couple of layers of skin…

In 1836 – Texas declares its independence from Mexico, with the declaration being signed the following day. The Texas Revolution had begun the previous October, a battle that included other Mexican provinces rebelling against the rule of President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. The revolution would end in May with the signing of the Treaty of Velasco and the first Texan Congress would convene in October. Texas became part of the US in February 1846.

In 1962 – Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia Warriors establishes a new NBA record for most points in a game in a 169-147 win over the New York Knicks in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Chamberlain had 100 points, breaking the record of 78 points he had established the previous December 8 and the record still stands. It was the third time Chamberlain had set the NBA’s single-game scoring record and the 316 combined points established a new NBA record for most points in a game, a mark now held by the Detroit Pistons and the Denver Nuggets (370, 12/13/83).

In 1974 – Bob Dylan with The Band is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the third of four consecutive weeks with Planet Waves. It was the eighth of 22 Top 10 albums for Dylan and his first of five #1 albums for and remains the only appearance at #1 on a Billboard chart for The Band. The album produced two chart singles, neither of which made the Top 40.

In 1781 – The Articles of Confederation – the first governing document of the US since declaring independence from Great Britain in 1989 – takes effect. The Second Continental Congress had sent the Articles to the states in 1777, with unanimous approval being required for ratification. The Articles had been drawn up by a committee of 13, one representative from each state, and the Constitution would replace the Articles in 1989.

In 1919 – Newsy Lalonde of the Montreal Canadiens establishes a new NHL playoff record for most goals scored in a game in a 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators in Game 3 of the NHL Finals. Lalonde broke the record of three that had been done five times previously and the mark has been tied four times since. The Canadiens would defeat the Senators in five games and faced the PCHA champion Seattle Metropolitans for the Stanley Cup, a series that was canceled after five games due to the Spanish flu epidemic.

In 1969 – Sly & the Family Stone is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third of four consecutive weeks with Everyday People. The song also peaked at #36 in Great Britain, was in its second and final week at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 5th-biggest song of the year. It was the second of ten Top 40 hits for the group, their second of five Top 10 songs, and their first of three pop and soul #1s.

The larger size also means, of course, that we are making more coffee…This is because 12-ounce cups hold more than 8-ounce cups…

In 1966 – US astronauts Elliot See and Charles Basset are killed in a plane crash in St Louis. The two – the primary crew of Gemini 9 – were flying to St Louis for training with See – piloting in limited visibility – overshooting the runway the first time. The plane was left of the runway the second time when the plane crashed into the roof of the McDonnell Aircraft building adjacent to Lambert Field. An investigation showed the crash was likely due to pilot error.

In 1971 – Jack Nicklaus wins the PGA Championship, shooting a final round 73 to finish at seven-under for the tournament, four strokes ahead of Gary Player. It was the second of five PGA championships for Nicklaus and his ninth of a record 18 major titles. With the win, Nicklaus became the first golfer to win all four majors twice and in 1978 would become the first to win them three times. The tournament was played in February due to the summer heat in Florida.

In 1987 – Earl Thomas Conley is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with I Can’t Win For Losing You. It was the 12th of 18 #1 country songs for Conley, all in the 1980s, the third most in the decade behind Alabama and Ronnie Milsap. The song also went #3 country in Canada and was Billboard’s 38th-biggest country song of the year.
