In 1789 – John Adams is sworn in as the first vice president of the United States at Federal Hall in New York City, then the capital of the United States. The United States Constitution had taken effect on March 4 but neither Adams or president-elect George Washington were in the capital to take their oaths of office. Washington, in fact, was in Trenton, New Jersey on this date and would be inaugurated on April 30. Adams would serve two terms as vice president and would be elected president in 1796, serving one term.

In 1934 – Moe Berg of the Washington Senators establishes a new American League record for most consecutive errorless games by a catcher in a 7-2 loss to the Philadelphia Athletics. It was the 117th consecutive errorless game for Berg, and research into whose record he broke, and who held the National League record, was inconclusive. Berg’s major league career had started as a shortstop and in World War II he was a spy for the Office of Strategic services. The big league record for most consecutive errorless games by a catcher is now 253 by Mike Redomond, from 2004-10.

1979 – Amii Stewart is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Knock on Wood. It was the first of three chart singles for Stewart and remains her only Top 40, Top 10, and #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada and peaked at #6 in both Great Britain and on Billboard’s soul chart. Versions by Eddie Floyd (#28, 1966) and Otis Redding (#30, 1967) have also hit the Hot 100.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow fields a complaint from someone who stayed at a competing hotel. Today’s Diary.

Ol’ Sparrow was sympathetic and, always thinking sales, said “Look, I work at another hotel…Had you stayed with me” tapping my chest as if I owned the joint “you not only would’ve had satisfactory in-room coffee but first-class morning coffee service in the lobby, too”…

In 2010 – The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explodes in the Gulf of Mexico, about 250 miles southeast of Houston, killing eleven people. The oil spill lasted until September, when the well was finally sealed, with the US government estimating the total discharge at 210 million gallons. The rig would sink on the 22nd and this remains the largest marine oil spill ever.

In 1988 – The Baltimore Orioles establish a new major league record for most consecutive losses at the start of a season in an 8-6 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. It was the 14th consecutive loss for the Brewers, breaking the record of 13 losses established by the Washington Senators in 1904 and tied by the Detroit Tigers in 1920. The Orioles would go on to lose their first 21 games of the year, a record that still stands.

In 1991 – Wilson Phillips is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with You’re In Love. It was the fourth chart single for the group, all of which reached the Top 10, and was their third and final #1 song. The song also peaked at #29 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s 27th-biggest song of the year. The group last hit a Billboard singles chart in 2012 when a remake of Good Vibrations peaked at #25 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

In 1775 – The American Revolution begins, with forces from the Continental Army and the British Army meeting in the Battles of Lexington and Concord west of Boston. The night before, news of the arrival of British troops had been passed by assorted patriots on horseback and the battles were a victory for the Americans, with the British retreating to Boston, which led to the Siege of Boston, which led to another British retreat the following March. The Revolution ended in 1783 with an American victory.

In 2021 – Patrick Marleau of the San Jose Sharks establishes a new NHL record for most games played in a 3-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. It was the 1,768th NHL game for Marleau, breaking the record established by Gordie Howe from 1946-80. Marleau played his first NHL game on October 1, 1999 for San Jose and also played with Toronto and Pittsburgh in his career. He retired after the season with 1,779 games played, still the NHL record.

In 1969 – The 5th Dimension is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of six consecutive weeks with the medley of Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In. It was the eighth of 20 Top 40 hits for the group, their third of seven Top 10 hits, and was their first of two #1s (Wedding Bell Blues, three weeks, 1969). The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #11 in Great Britain, and at #6 on Billboard’s soul chart. Both songs were written for the musical Hair.

In 1906 – An earthquake strikes northern California at 5:12 am. The quake measured an estimated 7.9, though the Richter scale had not been invented yet, and between the quake and the resulting fire, over 3,000 people died in San Francisco, with approximately 80% of the city destroyed. The epicenter is generally believed to have been offshore a bit northwest of the Golden Gate, and it remains the deadliest earthquake in US history.

In 1960 – Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox becomes the first major league player to hit a home run in four different decades in a 10-1 loss to the Washington Senators. Williams’ home run came in the second inning off of Camilo Pascual and his first home run had come on April 23, 1939, off of Bud Thomas of the Philadelphia As. Williams would retire after the season with 521 career home runs, then good for third on the all-time list behind Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx

In 1981 – Smokey Robinson is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul singles chart – for the third of five consecutive weeks with Being With You. It was the tenth of 15 Top 10 soul hits for Robinson and was his second and final soul #1. The song also went #1 pop in Great Britain and peaked at #2 on the Hot 100. Robinson originally wrote the song for Kim Carnes, but his producer insisted that Smokey record it.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow escorts paramedics to a guest’s room.

…and there’s a really fat guy wearing only underwear, something nobody really needed to see, and he’s leaning over the bathroom sink and he’s having trouble breathing, probably having trouble with the altitude, tho this guy was so obese merely walking to the can may have done him in.

In 1961 – The Bay of Pigs invasion on the southern coast of Cuba begins. Financed by the CIA, the invasion was conducted by about 1,400 Cuban exiles who, along with the CIA wanted to overthrow Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. After modest initial success, the invasion weakened and President Kennedy declined to order further air support and the invasion would end on April 20, a decisive victory for the Cubans and a complete disaster for the United States.

In 1983 – The Edmonton Oilers and New York Islanders each tie the NHL playoff record for most shorthanded goals in a game, Edmonton in a 10-2 win over Calgary and the Islanders in a 7-6 loss to the New York Rangers. The feat had first been accomplished by the Boston Bruins in the 1981 playoffs and the record still stands.

In 1965 – Freddie and the Dreamers is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with I’m Telling You Now. It was the first of four Top 40 hits for the group and remains their only Top 10 and #1 hit. The song also went to #1 in Canada and in 1963 peaked at #2 in Great Britain. The group’s leader Freddie Garrity inspired a dance called The Freddie with his on-stage dancing – mainly throwing your hands up and kicking your legs out – and the dance inspired a song that peaked at #18 on the Hot 100.
