The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow investigates a loud ice machine at the hotel. Today’s Diary. 

Ol’ Sparrow goes up to investigate and…look[s] at it in his usual fashion: crossly with his hands on his hips…In the Upset of the Year, this appears to be working because after a few minutes there hasn’t been any noise except for some running water, so we head down the wing to get our hotel walk in and we were all the way down the hall and had even turned right and were in front of 243 when BOOM the ice machine drops a load and we’re surprised it didn’t register on the Richter scale because it was pretty loud…

In 1951 – Direct-dial, coast-to-coast telephone service begins in the United States, with the implementation of the North American Numbering Plan. The plan divides member territories into areas identified by an area code (which had first appeared in 1947), then a telephone’s location is further specified bu a three-digit central office code and a four-digit station number. The system originally had 86 geographic area codes and today the number is 357. 

In 1983 – Marvin Hagler retains his undisputed middleweight boxing title with a 15-round unanimous decision over Roberto Duran at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Hagler would later lose his WBC title to Ray Leonard but would retire as the WBA and IBF champion. Duran was the WBA junior middleweight champion at the time, a title he would be stripped of the following year. It was the eighth title defense for Hagler since winning it from Alan Minter in 1980. 

In 1979 – The Eagles are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Heartache Tonight. It was the ninth of eleven Top 10 hits for the group and their fifth and final #1 song. In 1983 a version by Conway Twitty peaked at #6 on Billboard’s country chart and the song was written by Don Henley, Glen Frey, Bob Seger, and J.D. Souther. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #40 in Great Britain, and due to charting in both the 1979 and 1980 chart years was Billboard’s 47th-biggest song of 1980.

…so ol’ Sparrow started hustling as if his next batch of workout supplements depended on securing this booking, graciously, tho not relentlessly, noting our complimentary transportation to the ski mountain, our easy access to the free city bus, our indoor AND outdoor pools and hot tubs, not to mention the vestal virgins that will be awaiting your commands in our freshly remodeled lobby.

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 11 – There’s a new #1 in race for The Dan Henning Trophy – symbolic of NFL Bottom Ten supremacy. 

Sort of like ancient times when if you killed the monarch in battle you became king, you lose to the #1 team, you become the #1 team as Packers bravely ascend B-10 throne

Military court-martial scheduled for Lions for shooting themselves in foot as B-10 stalwarts again unable to lose big one in tragic home win over Packers…

Rams quest for inaugural first-to-worst run continues with type of morale-depleting, last-second, road loss that tends to set tone for strong B-10 medal stand run…

Due to spending an inordinate amount of time watching the eclipse, all of today’s entries have run within the past two years. 

In 1969 – Humans reach the moon for the second time with Pete Conrad and Alan Bean landing on Apollo 12. Apollo 12 was struck by lightning shortly after blastoff and would later spend over 32 hours on the lunar surface with Conrad and Bean spending almost eight hours exploring the moon, including inspecting Surveyor 3, man’s first terrestrial contact with a previously launched spacecraft. Command module pilot Richard Gordon remained in lunar orbit and the crew would return to Earth on Nov 24th. 

In 2018 – The Los Angeles Rams defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 54-51 in the only NFL game where both teams scored at least 50 points. The game was tied 23-23 at halftime and the Rams got a touchdown with 1:49 left in the game to take the lead. It remains the third highest-scoring game in NFL history behind the Washington Redskins defeating the New York Giants 72-41 in 1966 and the Cincinnati Bengals defeating the Cleveland Browns 58-48 in 2004. 

In 1966 – The Supremes are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with you Keep Me Hangin’ On. The song also peaked at #8 in Great Britain and later spent four weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart and was the eighth of twelve #1 songs for the group on the pop chart and their fifth of eight #1 soul songs. A version by Vanilla Fudge peaked at #6 on the Hot 100 the following year and a version by Kim Wilde went to #1 in 1987, making the song the sixth of nine songs that have gone to #1 by separate artists on the Hot 100.

In 1957 – Pan Am Flight 7 – service from San Francisco to Honolulu – disappears over the Pacific Ocean, killing all 44 people on board. The flight took off at 11:30 am and the last communication had come at 5:04 pm and investigation into the cause was inconclusive. The first passengers and debris were found a week later by the Coast Guard about 900 miles northeast of Honolulu. The flight was the first leg of an around-the-world trip that was to eventually end in Philadelphia. 

In 1994 – Joe Dumars of the Detroit Pistons ties the NBA record for most three-point field goals in a game in a 126-112 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Dumars had ten three-pointers to tie the record established by Brian Shaw of the Miami Heat in 1993. The record was broken by Dennis Scott of the Orlando Magic who had eleven in an April 1996 game and the record is now 14, by Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors, who had 14 on October 29, 2018. 

In 1975 – War is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the only week with Lowrider. It was the fifth of eight top 10 soul hits for the group and remains their only #1. The song also went #12 pop in Great Britain and peaked at #7 on the Hot 100, their sixth of seven Top 10 pop hits. The song was from the album Why Can’t We Be Friends?

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has a room for a couple who’s car was wrecked. Today’s Diary. 

His big problem was getting their stuff out of his wrecked car; he said there was a lot of it and he wasn’t kidding…While his wife sat inside and talked to someone on the phone – the tow truck driver strongly suspected her boyfriend because she hung up as soon as her husband came within earshot – he went running from the car to the door bringing loose clothing and shoes, a couple of backpacks, a case of water, and what appeared to be their monthly bills…

In 1916 – Jeanette Rankin becomes the first woman to be elected to the United States Congress. Rankin came in second mof six candidates in the election for two seats from Montana’s at-large district, earning 24.3% of the vote behind incumbent John Evans 26.7% of the vote. Rankin lost the Republican primary in 1918 and would be re-elected to Congress in 1940. She was known for introducing legislation that eventually became the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote, and for voting against World Wars I and II. 

In 1991 – Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers announces his retirement from the NBA after testing positive for HIV. Johnson had played twelve seasons with the Lakers, had led them to five NBA titles, and retired as the NBA’s all-time assists leader, a mark now held by John Stockton. Johnson returned for 32 games in the 1995-96 season and retired averaging 19.5 points, 11.2 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game. 

In 1964 – Buck Owens is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the fourth of six consecutive weeks with I Don’t Care (Just As Long As You Love Me). It was the fourth of 20 #1 country hits for Owens, his fourth #1 of the year, and the fourth of 14 consecutive #1s. The song also went #1 country in Canada and peaked at #92 on the Hot 100.
