The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow, in a mild upset, doesn’t whine about getting rained on. Today’s Diary.

The big news is it was raining pretty good during the soak, especially toward the end…This was a lot of fun because it’s rare when ol’ Sparrow is out in the rain without whining like a four-year-old but there was no whining today because, you know, we were soaking and already wet.

In 1642 – Harvard College conducts its first commencement ceremony. Nine men were graduated in a ceremony that consisted of speeches, eating and drinking, and debates on topics of the day. Diplomas weren’t issued until 1813 and class rank was based on the social standing of your parents. Harvard had been founded in 1636 as the College at Newtowne and was renamed in 1639 after Rev. John Harvard willed the college half his estate and his entire library.

In 1868 – Tom Morris, Jr of Scotland become the youngest British Open champion ever, shooting a final round 49 to beat his father, Tom Morris, Sr, by three strokes at the Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. (The tournament was played in one day, with three 12-hole rounds.) It was the first of four Open titles for Morris, Jr, all consecutive, and Morris, Jr died in 1875 of natural causes. He remains the youngest winner of a major in golf history.

In 1967 – The Beatles are at #1 on Billboard’s Top LPs Chart – a predecessor to the Billboard 200 album chart – for the 13th of 15 consecutive weeks with Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was the tenth of 19 #1 albums for the group, a Billboard album chart record that still stands. The album also went to #1 in seven other countries including Norway, West Germany, and Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 10th-biggest album of 1967 and its 6th-biggest of 1968. It remains the group’s biggest US album in terms of weeks spent at #1.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow goes out to dinner. Today’s Diary.

We shaved the dome, and even trimmed the beard down to 3 mm…This wasn’t a given, frankly…We neglected to bring our beard trimmer to state veterans service officer (VSO) training last week and it actually felt pretty good growing out but about mid-afternoon it started feeling scruffy and trimmed really is the best look with a blazer, anyway, so down it went.

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1776 – American spy Nathan Hale is executed by the British in Manhattan, one day after he was captured. Hale, a captain in the 19th regiment of the Continental Army, had volunteered for the mission earlier in the month and accounts about how he was captured differ, with one saying he was recognized and another saying he was betrayed by a cousin. History remains uncertain about whether or not Hale actually said he regretted having but one life to give for his country and his body was never found.

In 1957 – Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox ties the major league record for most home runs in consecutive at-bats in a 5-1 loss to the New York Yankees. Williams’ fourth-inning home run was his fourth in four consecutive at-bats, tying the record done eight times previously and done many times since. The home runs came over four games and included six walks and the streak ended with a single later in the game. The record still stands.

In 1984 – John Waite is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Missing You. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #9 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 11th-biggest song of the year. In 1996 a version by Tina Turner peaked at #84 on the Hot 100 and in 1999 a version by Brooks and Dunn went #75 pop and #15 country. It was the first of three Top 40 hits for Waite and remains his only #1 song as a solo act.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow goes out to dinner and sees some people he knows. Today’s Diary.

Dave has been mentioned here before: he is one of the biggest guys you’ll ever see that doesn’t need help getting around…He’s so big his gut hangs below his 17XL t-shirt and you could see it hanging out even as he sat at the bar…We’d run into him regularly at the old diner and it’s never been entirely clear what he does with himself when he’s not in an eating environment.

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 4 – The race for The Dan Henning Trophy – symbolic of NFL Bottom Ten supremacy – rolls on.

Offense in top form, producing kicks on first eight (8) drives, before pleading exhaustion and turning ball over on downs for final two (2) drives…

Raiders make 2022 B-10 debut with type of momentum-setting loss that generally leads straight to B-10 glory,

Falcons would be ranked higher, except B-10 pollsters “pretty sure” road loss to defending Super Bowl champions by B-10 medal stand aspirant should’ve been “like, a lot bigger and stuff”…

In 1792 – In the French Revolution, the National Convention – a legislature created by revolutionaries the month before – abolishes the French monarchy and created the French First Republic. King Louis XVI had actually been arrested in August and stripped of all titles and honors and was now known as Citizen Louis Capet. Citizen Louis Capet was convicted of treason and executed the following January. The French First Republic lasted until Napoleon was proclaimed emperor in 1804.

In 1985 – Michael Spinks wins the IBF heavyweight boxing title, defeating champion Larry Holmes in a unanimous decision at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas. Spinks would defend the title three times before being stripped by the IBF for refusing to fight Tony Tucker, while Holmes would go 0-for-5 in future title fights. Previously, Spinks had held the light heavyweight title for two years and won the middleweight gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics.

In 1974 – Barry White is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Can’t Get Enough of Your Love. It was the third of five Top 10 hits for White as a solo act, and remains his only #1, totals that do not include the #1 Loves Theme by the Love Unlimited Orchestra, which he led. The song also went Top 5 in Canada, peaked at #8 in Great Britain, and was in its third and final week at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow does battle with a bottle of olive oil. Today’s Diary.

The problem was we couldn’t get the GD olive oil bottle open…It had one of those plastic deals under the cap and twisting the cap didn’t break it nor did trying to cut it with the knife, tho we were careful here because the last thing anyone needs is ol’ Sparrow with a flesh wound…In the end, we gave up and infiltrated the restaurant, where what appeared to be some fancy-pants olive oil was procured.

The Bottom Ten/NCAA Week 4 – It’s New Mexico State, Colorado State, and Buffalo on the Bottom Ten medal stand, as the race for the ESPNCup rolls on.

Rams highest ranked B-10 team who share logo with pick-up truck since Tijuana Tech F-150s in 1963.

With loss this week, B-10 pollsters “pretty sure” Panthers will become first team in B-10 history to open season with four (4) straight losses to Carolina schools.

Bend-and-eventually-break defense in top form, giving up three of their touchdowns on drives of eight (8), eleven (11), and eleven (11) plays…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1984 – The US Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon is attacked by car bomb, killing 24 people, a total that includes the bomber. The Islamic militant group Hezbollah claimed responsibility. The driver was in a van with 3,000 pounds of explosives and the embassy was in a new building that was not yet fully secure. The bomber was initially shot and lost control of the van, which detonated when it crashed into a parked van. The only two Americans killed were an Army warrant officer and a Navy petty officer.

In 1919 – Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox ties the major league record for most home runs in a season in a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox in the first game of a doubleheader. Ruth’s 9th-inning home run was his 27th of the season, to tie the record established by Ned Williamson of the Chicago White Stockings – now the Cubs – in 1884. Ruth would break the record three times with the New York Yankees and the mark has been broken five times since, by Roger Maris in 1961, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and McGwire again in 1998, and  Barry Bonds, who hit 73 in 2001.

In 1947 – Francis Craig & His Orchestra with Bob Lamm is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Selling Singles chart for the first of twelve consecutive weeks with Near You. The song was also in its fifth of 17 consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Most Played on the Air chart, establishing a Billboard pop chart record for most consecutive weeks at #1 that was broken in 2019 by Old Town Road Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, which spent 19 consecutive weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. It remains the only #1 song for Craig and versions by the Andrew Sisters, Larry Green, and others also made the Top 10 that year.

Each people is, I believe, inclined to believe it is the purpose of history, that all that has happened is leading to now, to this world, to this country. Few see ourselves as fleeting phantoms on a much wider screen, or that our great cities may someday be dug from the ruins…
Louis L’Amour
