The Diary of a Nobody – At state VSO training, they talk about asbestos exposure. Today’ Dairy.

Anyway, asbestos was commonly used in all branches of the services for ages and the Navy did not stop putting it in new ships until 1977 and crap, ol’ Sparrow was on a diesel submarine that was built in the 1950s that was probably Asbestos City and, of course, it got us thinking…

This is the final complimentary Bottom Ten of the year.

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 3 – It’s Jacksonville, Detroit, and Carolina on the first Bottom Ten medal stand of the season.

Jaguar fan(s) sitting around doing nails as “generational” QB taking leisurely route to Hall of Fame, playoffs…

Defense getting kudos for building deficit not even 17 fourth-quarter points by offense could overcome…

With solid opening week thumping, Cardinals early candidate for B-10’s new Otis Elevator Award, to be issued to team that goes from playoffs to B-10 medal stand in 2022…

Extra, extra, read all about it.

Due to time constraints, all three of today’s entries have appeared previously. The third one appeared in a different week and was rewritten.

In 1959 – Man reaches the surface of another celestial body for the first time when the Soviet Union’s Luna 2 crashes into the moon. The mission had lifted off on September 12 and impacted the moon at a speed of 7,400 mph, landing about 94 miles northwest of where Apollo 15 eventually landed. A January attempt by the Soviets missed the moon by 3,700 miles, an attempt that itself followed three unnamed, unsuccessful missions.

1913 – The New York Giants establish a new major league record for most hits in a shutout loss in a 9-inning game in a 7-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs. The Giants had 14 hits – 13 singles and a double – and left eleven men on base. Larry Chaney was the Cubs pitcher and he is listed in the record book for most hits allowed in a shutout win by a pitcher. Both records were tied in 1928 when Milt Gaston of the Washington Senators allowed 14 hits in a 9-0 win over the Cleveland Indians in the second game of a doubleheader.

1996 – Los Del Rios is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the seventh of 14 consecutive weeks with Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix). The song also went to #1 in ten other countries including Switzerland, Holland, and Israel, and peaked at #2 in Great Britain. The song remains the only chart entry for the group, and the only thing preventing them from being an ultimate one-hot wonder – a group whose only chart single goes to #1 – is another version of the song was concurrently in the Hot 100. The song was Billboard’s biggest song of 1996, their 82nd-biggest of 1997, their second biggest of the decade, and ranked 8th on Billboard’s 60th Anniversary Hot 100 in 2018.

This is the final complimentary Bottom Ten. Get your credit cards out for next week.

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 3
By Gaylon KentAmerica’s Funniest Guy™

And they’re off, as the race for the most coveted in sports – The Dan Henning Trophy, symbolic of NFL Bottom Ten supremacy – begins with a whole new slate of winless teams staring Bottom Ten fan(s) in the face. Can the Giants repeat? Will Jacksonville or Detroit rebound from 2021’s collapse? Will an opening week winner assert themselves?

Maybe, but veteran Bottom Ten watcher(s) know the road to the title will be won or lost – probably lost – in Jacksonville.

This week’s mess, as the nags break from the starting gate:

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow fields a noise complaint on a vacant room producing no noise. Today’s Diary.

…you might think a noise complaint on an empty, otherwise quiet room might be another Sparrow Front Desk First (SFDF) but no, this actually happens from time to time.

The Bottom Ten/NCAA Week 3 – It’s New Mexico State, UMess, and Colorado State on the Bottom Ten medal stand this week, as the fight for the ESPN Cup rolls on. The Bottom Ten is free this week.

If Minutemen can pull out loss to lower level team this week, it should be clear sailing until 10/29 showdown with #1 New Mexico State.

Rams new to B-10, with coaching staff still reviewing B-10 onboarding packet, with B-10 staffers already fielding questions about small-bills-only initiation fee to be delivered in stadium parking lot at midnite.

B-10 pollsters, fan(s), hoisting mug of grog in honor of return of Bulls, who gave Duke all they could handle for B-10 Team of the Decade honors for the Double Aughts…

In 1501 – Michelangelo begins work on the statue that would become David in Florence, Italy. Work on the statue had begun 40 years earlier by Agostino di Duccio, but ended after only a rough form of the feet, legs, and torso had been started. The work was completed in 1504, and was originally scheduled to be placed on the roof of the Florence Cathedral but ended up being placed outside of City Hall. It is now inside the Gallery of the Academy of Florence and stands 17 feet tall and weighs a bit more than six tons.

In 2010 – Rafael Nadal of Spain wins the US Open, defeating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in New York City. It was the first of four US Open titles for Nadal, his ninth of a men’s record 22 Grand Slam titles, and Nadal became the first person to win Wimbledon, the French Open, and the US Open in the same year since Rod Laver in 1969. It was the second of six losses in a US Open final for Djokovic, who has also won the tournament three times. Nadal’s loss in the second set of the final was the only set he lost in the tournament.

In 1980 – Jackson Browne is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the only week with Hold Out. It was the sixth chart album for Browne, his third of four Top 10 albums, and remains his only #1. The album produced three singles, including the Top 40 hits Boulevard and That Girl Could Sing. Previously, Brown had been a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and had success as a songwriter before releasing his self-titled debut album in 1972.

The Bottom Ten/NCAA Week 3

From the start of the 2022 race for the ESPN Cup, Bottom Ten fan(s) everywhere have been saying this may well be the deepest field ever. They may be right: three weeks in and there have already been three teams occupying the B-10 throne and there are still no less – and no more – than 18 (18) unvictoried teams.

Bottom Ten fan(s) every are hoping new #1 New Mexico State can provide some stability. The Aggies are no stranger to the glare of the Bottom Ten lights and the 2022 Bottom Ten title is theirs to lose. Literally.

The line from ol’ Sparrow:

Like you, we thought it was a pretty good line, perhaps even a Line of the Year candidate, but Ms 224 thought not, treating it as if it were a decree from Mount Sinai…

In 2013 – Voyager I is confirmed by NASA to be the first man-made object to leave the Solar System and enter interstellar space. Voyager I was launched in 1977, visited Jupiter and Saturn, and is thought to have entered interstellar space in August 2012 when charged particles stopped being blocked by winds from the Sun and it remains the farthest spacecraft from Earth. It has since been joined in interstellar space by Voyager II and Pioneer 10, though Pioneer 10 and New Horizons will eventually join them.

In 1962 – Tom Cheney of the Washington Senators establishes a new major league record for most strikeouts in a game in a 2-1, 16-inning victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Cheney struck out 21 batters to break the record of 18, done three times, twice by Sandy Koufax and once by Bob Feller. Cheney pitched a complete game, giving up ten hits and walking four. The 9-inning record is 20, done five times, most recently by Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals in 2016.

In 1998 – Aerosmith is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks with I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing. It was the 19th of 22 Top 40 hits for the group, their seventh of eight Top 10 songs, and remains their only #1. The song went to #1 in eight other countries including Greece, Australia, and Norway, peaked at #4 in Great Britain, and at #14 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart. The song was written by Diane Warren, who thought the song might be recorded by “Celine Dion or somebody like that”.

The Daily Dose/September 11, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Queen Elizabeth II Say what you want about inherited wealth and privilege, but her life offered full measures of grace, dignity, and reserve – traits most profess to admire but few emulate…Managed to turn a life she had no control over into something her subjects needed.

2. King Charles III – Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “strongly suspect” rookie King will seamlessly transition from life of opening hospital wings, living in a palace, and having his every need attended to to his new life of opening hospital wings, living in a palace, and having his every need attended to.

3. USA! USA! The current 3-hole staple…With 75 percent of kids no longer qualified to join the Army and citizens still earning marksmanship ribbons at record pace America – land of the well-fed and home of the well-entertained – still far closer to the oblivion that awaits her than the prosperity she once knew.

4. 9/11 Anniversary You know, 21 years ago we recall thinking that the Twin Towers would’ve still been standing if America had given other nations the dignity of conducting their affairs without the benefit of US interference…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters still think that…Our violent planet is due, in no small part, to a violent American.

5. Baseball Rule Changes You know guys, banning infielders shifting means 1) teams can’t do their best do win games, and, 2) doesn’t address the problem of why they shift in the first place: because batters are swinging for the fences and are unwilling to hit to the opposite field…Your game is mirroring our country and slowly dying.

The Diary of a Nobody – There’s another bear sighting at the hotel. Today’s Diary.

I don’t really think bears know the power they wield over us…If they did, they’d stop hibernating over the winter and take over because everyone craps their pants anytime they’re in sight even tho bear maulings are very rare.

Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1708 – King Charles the XII of Sweden declines to press on to Moscow in the Great Northern War with Russia, led by Tsar Peter the Great. Charles made the decision about 200 miles southwest of Moscow due to a harsh winter and a lack of reinforcements and provisions. The Great Northern War would be decided the following spring when Russia won the Battle of Poltava, a loss that marked the end of Sweden as a world power, though the war didn’t actually end until 1721.

In 1918 – The Boston Red Sox win the World Series, defeating the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in Game 6 at Fenway Park in Boston to win the series 4 games to 2. It was the fifth of nine World Series titles for the Red Sox and the third of eight World Series losses for the Cubs. The Red Sox scored only nine runs in the series, the fewest ever by a World Series champion, and the series remains one of three that did not have a home run (1906, 1907). It was the last time the two teams met until a regular season match-up in 2005 and, due to World War I, this remains the only World Series played entirely in September.

In 1971 – Carole King is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the 13th of 15 consecutive weeks with Tapestry. The 15 consecutive weeks at #1 established a record for an album by a female solo act that still stands and Tapestry was Billboard’s 2nd-biggest album of both 1971 and 1972, and its 22nd biggest of 1973. The album produced two chart singles including the #1 It’s Too Late/I Feel the Earth Move and won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
