The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow gets another visit from Paula. Today’s Diary.

The past two nites she’s been by around midnite or 0100, but she appeared to get a decent rest tonite because she wasn’t by until 0350…By chance, I already had the first pot of joe for Morning Coffee Service (MCS) going, so she didn’t have long to wait for her caffeine fix…

The Bottom Ten/Preseason Q&A – Like a fruit fly, or cancer, America’s funniest Bottom Ten from America’s Funniest Guy™ is back for another season.

Q: Which of your tired, old lines will you be trotting out this year
A: Your B-10 pollsters “strongly suspect” every single one of them.

In 1970 – What History refers to as the Salad Bowl Strike begins against growers in California’s Salinas Valley and the Teamsters union, which was asserting bargaining authority over farm workers. The strike was organized by Ceasar Chavez and the United Farm Workers, which also claimed jurisdiction. Chavez was arrested and later released from custody in December and the strike ended the following March, though disputes between the UFW and the Teamsters continued. It remains the largest farm worker strike in US history.

In 1970 – Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates ties the modern major league record for most hits in consecutive games in an 11-0 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Clemente went 5-for-6, including a double and a home run, giving him ten hits in his last two games, tying a mark that had been done three times previously. The all-time major league record for hits in consecutive games is 12, done by Cal McVey of the Chicago White Stockings, now the Cubs, in 1876.

In 1986 – T.G. Sheppard is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Strong Heart. It was the 26th if 29 country Top 10 hits for Sheppard and was his 14th and final #1 in a chart career that lasted from 197-91. The song also went #1 country in Canada, his sixth and final #1 there. Sheppard was born William Neal Browder in Tennessee in 1944 and ran away from home at 15 to get his start in country music.

The Bottom Ten/Preseason Q&A

The Bottom Ten/Preseason Q&A
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Preseason Q&A started humbly enough, as desperate filler material when the colleges began playing games a week earlier than usual. Now, of course, it’s an American classic. Or soon will be; Bottom Ten pollsters still aren’t entirely certain yet.

The Bottom Ten begins in earnest next week, with the Week 1 college and NFL surveys. The first two or three will be on the house, then you will be expected to get your your credit cards and subscribe.

Q: Can Florida International become the first team ever to win three consecutive Bottom Ten titles?
A: Odds are no. No team has ever three-peated, the Bottom Ten waters are simply to hazardous to run aground on for three straight years. Longtime Bottom Ten fan(s), however, know of Florida International’s long, rich Bottom Ten history and know you count them out any Bottom Ten conversation at your peril.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow offers a guest some options for going to church. Today’s Diary.

I warned Paula it wasn’t like the traditional churches she’s probably accustomed to and that ol’ Sparrow grew up with…For one, there’s no such thing as your Sunday best there; folks wear whatever they want…Plus, the sanctuary has theater seating instead of pews and there was neither altar nor a pulpit, either…She waved this off, saying she didn’t have goin’ to meeting clothes, anyway, and that it would be good to be in a church on a Sunday morning besides.

In 1978 – Congress sends to the several states a constitutional amendment that would give the District of Columbia three votes for president in the electoral college. The amendment gave no role to the district in a contingent election when a president or vice president is elected by the House or Senate because no one received an Electoral College majority. The amendment was not approved by the required 38 states in the seven-year time limit and was not ratified.

In 1917 – Carson Bigbee of the Pittsburgh Pirates establishes a new major league record for most at-bats in a game in a 6-5, 22-inning loss to the Brooklyn Robins. Bigbee had eleven at-bats in the game and research into whose record he broke was inconclusive. The record still stands, has been tied many times and the nine-inning mark is eight, also done many times. It was the fourth consecutive extra-inning game for the Pirates, which established a new National League record.

In 1964 – The Supremes are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Where Did Our Love Go. It was the second Top 40 hit for the group and their first of five consecutive and twelve overall #1 songs. The song also went to #1 in New Zealand and Canada, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 10th-biggest song of the year. The song was written by Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier.

The Diary of a Nobody/Sunday, August 21, 2022

The Daily Dose/August 21, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. GOP – As if there were any doubt, Congresswomen Liz Cheney’s defeat if Republican primary cements fact that GOP is firmly in hands of Donald Trump, despite fact Trump is a liar, a sexual predator, and an ignoramus with blood on his hands from an ignorant and inept coronavirus response…Oh, and it turns out he’s a thief now, too.

2. Deshaun Watson – You know, Deshaun, SB5 pollsters have a solid working knowledge of he said/she said deals, but 22 accusations???…Innoncence is not a reasonable claim here, no matter how firmly you choose to stand on it…Plus, you apologized…You got off easy with a 12-game suspension…Props to your agent, though, for negotiating a contract that will see you lose relatively little money.

3. USA! USA! The 3-hole staple…Country still far closer to the oblivion that awaits it than the prosperity, influence it once had because no nation can survive perpeltual war, deep social divide, and an utter lack of national vision – not to mention Donald Trump and his supporters – forever…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “strongly suspect” America has until half-century is out to show it can govern itself before someone comes in and does it for us.

4. The Bottom Ten The American classic returns this week, as the very worst college and professional teams vie for the ESPN Cup and the Dan Henning Memorial Trophy…Can Florida International and the New York Giants repeat???…Can B-10 pollsters come up with any more lame trophies to issue???…Find out this week as the 2022 Quests for Lousiness (Q4L) begins!!!

5. Fake News Tired of fake fake news claims???…Click here for a recap of real fake news, things the wizards among us were actually believing…Courtesy of the AP.

In 1911 – The Mona Lisa, a painting by Leonardo da Vinci, is stolen from the Louvre museum in Paris by an Italian employee named Vincenzo Peruggia. Peruggia kept the painting at his Paris apartment for two years before moving with it to Italy, where he was arrested in 1913 and served six months in prison for the theft. Though now one of the planet’s best-known artworks, the Mona Lisa was not particularly well known outside of the art world – where it was highly regarded – at the time of the theft.

In 1982 – Rollie Fingers of the Milwaukee Brewers becomes the first major league pitcher to record 300 saves in a 3-2 win over the Seattle Mariners. It was the 28th save of the season for Fingers, who pitched the final two innings, giving up three hits and two runs to save the game for Doc Medich. Fingers retired in 1985 with 341 saves, a mark now good for 15th on the all-time list. Fingers’ mark was broken in 1992 by Jeff Reardon and is now held by Mariano Rivera with 652.

In 2004 – Terror Squad is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Lean Back. It was the first of two chart singles for the group and remains their only Top 40 hit. The song also peaked at #24 in Great Britain, was its fifth of seven weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was in its second of twelve weeks at #1 on Billboard’s rap chart. Lean Back was Billboard’s 10th-biggest song of the year, it’s 5th-biggest soul song, and it’s #1 rap song of the year.

The Diary of a Nobody/August 20

It’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, August 20
Amy and I shared a laff tonite…I had just favored everyone with my appearance at the front desk when this woman – nowhere near ol’ Sparrow’s wheelhouse, a point that will become important here in a bit – comes up to buy some sundry stand stuff: chips, a candy bar, and a soda…She’s pretty chatty, too, and I can see Amy glancing at me out of the corner of her eye and when the gal who, again, could not be farther out of the wheelhouse if she had a passport, gives me a $5 tip, Amy can be seen fighting off laughter…The woman leaves soon enuff.

In 1986 – Patrick Sherrill, a postal worker in Edmund, Oklahoma, shoots and kills 14 co-workers in the first of several post office shootings in the US. Six others were injured and after his rampage, Sherrill shot himself. Sherrill, a former Marine, was a relief mail carrier who often worked different routes and the day before had been reprimanded by supervisors. It remains the deadliest workplace shooting in US history.

In 1888 – Palmer Presby and TS Tailer establish the record for the longest match at the US Open in a 19-21, 8-6, 6-1, 6-4 Presby opening round win. Research into whose record they broke was inconclusive and the 80 games established a mark that stood until 1966 when a doubles match went 105 games, a mark that was tied in 1967. The longest US Open singles match is 100 games between Franklin Robbins and Donald Dell in 1969 and the longest ever match is 183 games between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut, at Wimbledon in 2010.

In 1966 – The Lovin’ Spoonful is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of three consecutive weeks with Summer in the City. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #6 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 35th biggest song of the year. It was the fifth of seven Top 10 hits for the group and remains their only #1 song. In 1973 a version by Quincy Jones peaked at #30 on the Adult Contemporary chart and won the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement.

In 1991 – The dissolution of the Soviet Union begins in earnest when some hardline communists get their shorts in a knot and overthrow Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who is on holiday in Ukraine and discovered the coup when he tried to make a phone call and couldn’t get a dial tone. The coup lasted two days, thanks mainly to resistance led by Russian President Boris Yelstin, and Gorbachev was returned to power. Gorbachev resigned as Soviet president on Dec. 25th and the last vestige of the Soviet Union, its Council of Republics, voted the nation out of existence the following day.

In 1951 – Eddie Gaedel makes his only major league appearance, pinch-hitting in the second game of a doubleheader, a 6-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers. Batting in the bottom of the first inning for leadoff hitter Frank Saucier, Gaedel was walked on four pitches by pitcher Bob Cain and then was immediately replaced by pinch-runner Jim Delsing. Gaedel, a professional entertainer, was 3 feet, 7 inches tall, had a strike zone about the size of a coffee cup, and remains the shortest player to appear in a major league game.

In 1967 – The Beatles are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with All You Need Is Love. It was the 14th of a Billboard Hot 100 record 20 #1 songs for the group, a Hot 100 record that still stands, and was their 19th of 34 Top 10 hits. The song went to #1 in nine other countries, including Norway, West Germany, and Great Britain, and originally appeared on a June international television show. It was released as a non-album single, though it later appeared on the Yellow Submarine album.
