The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has the latest Morning Coffee Service (MCS) news. Today’s Diary.
Despite the new coffee offering, we continue to enjoy some stability after the Spring Troubles, which saw both creamer instability and new cups and lids – not to mention a second type of coffee – introduced…The creamer situation is back to normal and everyone’s adapted to the new cups and lids.

In 1863 – The Seige of Vicksburg in the American Civil War ends in a Union victory when Confederate troops surrender to US Major General Ulysses S Grant. The siege had begun in May and Confederate commander Lieutenant General John Pemberton had requested surrender terms on July 3. Rather than feed 30,000 Confederate prisoners, Grant granted them parole and the victory gave the Union control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in two.
In 1919 – Jack Dempsey wins the world heavyweight boxing title, defeating Jess Willard in Toledo, Ohio when Willard was unable to answer the bell for the fourth round.. Willard had been so confident of victory that he had asked for immunity in case he killed Dempsey in the ring, but Willard was knocked down seven times in the first round and Dempsey would defend his title five times before losing it to Gene Tunney in 1926. Ringside seats sold for $60, about a thousand dollars in today’s money.
In 1992 – Sir Mix-A-Lot is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of five consecutive weeks with Baby Got Back. It was the second of three chart singles for Sir Mix-A-Lot and remains his only Top 40 hit. The song also peaked at #56 in Great Britain, at #27 on Billboard’s soul chart, and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Sir Mix-A-Lot was born Anthony Ray in Auburn, Washington, where he still maintains a home.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
Knowledge is power.
The latest inning in which both teams have scored runs in a major league game is the 21st, when the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago White Sox each scored three runs. The White Sox won the game 7-6 in 25 innings, still the longest game in American League history and the longest major league game with a winner.

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.
1. Lauren Daigle – Past 3-hole staple returns to survey to celebrate installation of USA! USA! as latest 3-hole staple…Daigle fondly remembered by SB5 reader(s) for weekly entries chronicling chart run of hit single “You Say” which established Billboard singles chart and all-chart records for most weeks at #1 when song spent 132 non-consecutive weeks atop Hot Christian singles chart from 2018-21.
2. Donald Trump – Immediate past 3-hole staple sticks around to celebrate inauguration of USA! USA! as new 3-hole staple, an entry he is in no small measure responsible for…Trump still darling of GOP for brilliantly exposing that most of America is just like him: selfish, ignorant, and bigoted…Thanks Donny!!!
3. USA! USA! – Shiny and new, frequent Sunday Bottom 5 entry finds new home as latest SB5 3-hole staple…Declining, once-proud country now nothing more than cesspool of fringe elements trying to force-feed their way of life on others, as sensible middle ground now long gone from American scene…America now well closer to the oblivion that awaits her than the respect and esteem she once had.
4. USC, UCLA – Pac-8, Pac-10, Pac-12, stalwarts not really surprising anyone by money grabbing move to evil Big Ten Conference, but boy, for Pac-12 fans it’s like watching your parents find another family or watching the eastern time zone join the Warsaw Pact.
5. Presidential Fact Check – Another former stalwart, past 5-hole staple returning to cheer on USA! USA! in new home…Unfortunately, Biden Administration stubbornly sticking to facts, and Presidential Fact Check largely in remission right now, though skeleton crew of fact-checkers remain on 24/7 standby just in case.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow is obliged to deal with some wizards at the hotel. Today’s Diary.
Well, ol’ Sparrow has been knocking around front desks for an awfully long time and this was the first request for a “manager’s rate” he’d ever fielded…It was, of course, reminiscent of that dolt at Hotel B who wandered in at zero dark thirty one morning, asking if there was anything on the “reserve list”, another lodging innovation we hadn’t heard of.

In 1776 – One day after declaring independence from Great Britain, the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, conducts routine business concerning New Jersey and the commissioner of Indian Affairs before meeting as the Committee of the Whole to take up the matter of what its journals always refer to as the Declaration. After some discussion, the committee decides to defer the matter until the 4th. The Committee of the Whole was chaired by Benjamin Harrison V, whose son William Henry and his grandson Benjamin, later served as presidents of the United States.
In 1983 – The Texas Rangers establish a major league record for the most runs scored in an extra inning in a 16-4 win over the Oakland Athletics. The Rangers got 12 runs in the 15th inning to break the record of eleven set by the New York Yankees in 1928 and tied by the Minnesota Twins in 1969, and the record still stands. The Athletics chipped in an error, and only twelve of the runs were earned.
In 1982 – Ronny Milsap is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart for the only week with Any Day Now. The song also went to #1 country in Canada, peaked at #14 on the Hot 100, and was Milsap’s 20th of 35 #1 country hits, a figure that trails only Merle Haggard (38), Conway Twitty (40), and George Strait (44) on the all-time list. In 1962 a version by Chuck Jackson peaked at #2 on the soul chart and at #23 on the Hot 100, making the song one of the few to chart on all three major Billboard singles charts. The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Bob Hilliard.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow drives a buddy to the VA hospital. Today’s Diary.
The first thing I noticed when I saw him was how thin he looked and while I didn’t bring it up, he later mentioned he was down to 120 (my thighs weigh 120) and he had no idea why…He has a variety of appointments at the VA today, and maybe some of it will get diagnosed…

History’s long march.
In 1776 – The United States of America is formed when the Second Continental Congress adopts the Lee Resolution which declared “That these United Colonies are, and, of right, ought to be, Free and Independent States…”. The American Revolution had started the previous year and would end with Great Britain conceding American independence in 1783. The Declaration of Independence, merely some blather about all men being created equal and stuff, was passed by Congress two days later.
In 1927 – Helen Wills of the US wins the ladies singles title at Wimbledon, defeating Lili de Alvarez of Spain 6-2, 6-4. It was the first of a then-record eight singles titles for Wills and her fourth of 19 Grand Slam singles titles and the record for most Wimbledon ladies singles titles is now held by Martina Navratilova, with nine. It was the first Wimbledon tournament where players were seeded and was the first to feature radio broadcasts. Wills also won the doubles title, teaming with Elizabeth Ryan.
In 1966 – Frank Sinatra is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Strangers in the Night. It was his first of two #1 songs on the Hot 100 and his ninth of ten #1 songs on a Billboard pop chart. The song went to #1 in seven other countries, including Brazil, Switzerland, and Great Britain, and Sinatra is on record as not liking the song. Sinatra last appeared on the Hot 100 in 1980 when Theme From New York, New York peaked at #32 and last appeared on a Billboard singles chart last year, when several of his Christmas songs appeared on their Holiday Songs chart.

History’s long march.
In 1867 – The nation of Canada comes into existence when the British provinces of Canada (present-day Quebec and Ontario) New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia are joined following the passage of the Constitution Act of 1867. Sir John McDonald is sworn in as the country’s first prime minister and July 1 remains Canada’s national holiday. Today Canada has ten provinces and three territories, extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans and from the American border to the Arctic Ocean, and is the second-largest country in the world by size.
In 1910 – Comiskey Park in Chicago opens with a 2-0 win by the St Louis Browns over the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox would get their first win at their new home the following day and the stadium closed in 1990, its final game a 2-1 White Sox win over the Seattle Mariners. All told, the White Sox had a 3,326-2,889 regular-season record there and Comiskey Park hosted the World Series in 1917, 1919, and 1959. Previously, the White Sox had played at South Side Park and in 1968 and 1969 played some home games at Milwaukee’s County Stadium.
In 1989 – Milli Vanilli is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Baby Don’t Forget My Number. It was the second of five chart singles for the group, their second of five Top 10s, their first of three #1 songs, and the song also peaked at #16 in Great Britain and at #9 on Billboard’s soul chart. Later in the year, it was discovered that the front men for the German duo hadn’t actually done the singing and the duo returned their 1990 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The real singers for Milli Vanilli were Americans Brad Howell and John Davis.

Lost in the cacophony of Oprah and O.J. are those classical values that once made a Saturday afternoon track meet so appealing. Of running for the love of competition, of throwing a javelin for applause and an olive wreath. Of sweating for hours on a lonesome track at dusk for the chance of maybe one day hearing the anthem. Of honor and glory and the spirit of victory, not the spoils.

History’s long march.
In 1908 – The largest recorded impact event occurs over a largely uninhabited portion of eastern Siberia when a meteor air burst destroys 80 million trees over 830 square miles. It is thought the meteor was between 50 and 60 feet wide and traveling at a speed of 60,000 mph. Though classified as an impact event, there is not an impact crater and it is believed whatever object caused the explosion disintegrated at an altitude of between three and six miles. History refers to the event as the Tunguska Event, after a nearby river.
In 1897 – R.F. Doherty of England wins the Wimbledon title defeating fellow Englishman Harold Mahony 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 in the championship match. It was the first of four Wimbledon titles for Doherty, who also won the US Open in 1902 and 1903 and he also teamed with his brother Laurence to win the doubles title. Doherty remains one of the most decorated tennis players ever, having also won Olympic doubles titles in 1900 and 1908, the mixed doubles title in 1900, and he was part of four consecutive British Davis Cup-winning teams from 1903-06.
In 1973 – The Spinners are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the fourth and final consecutive week with One of a Kind (Love Affair). It was the sixth of 18 Top 10 soul songs for the group and was their third of six soul #1s. The song also went #16 pop in Canada and peaked at #11 on the Hot 100. Instruments on the record were played by MFSB, a Philadelphia studio group that would hit #1 on the Hot 100 and soul chart the following year with TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia.)
