Recall last week we didn’t; we went out dirty and sweaty in our overalls but a couple of factors were in play this week: one, the overalls hadn’t been washed, so we probably stunk, and, two, we really wanted to wear our new shorts and sandals because so far there’s had been only one opportunity to wear them and it was warm today.

History’s long march.
In 1312 BC – King Mursili of the Hittites launches a campaign against the vassal state Azzi-Hayasa kingdom. This event, like others from the era, is dated due to an eclipse that was reported on the day of the battle and while some other dates have been offered, this date, reported as occurring in the tenth year of Mursili’s reign, is in line with him assuming the throne after the death of Tutankhamun – known to History as King Tut – in 1323 BC.
In 1882 – National League umpire Dick Higham become the first major league umpire banned for misconduct, for dealings with gamblers, and throwing games. Before umpiring, Higham had played three years in the major leagues – where rumors of him throwing games first surfaced – and is known for the hitting into the first triple play in big league history, on May 13, 1876, playing for the Hartford Dark Blues. Higham remains the only umpire so banned.
In 1978 – Andy Gibb is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of seven consecutive weeks with Shadow Dancing. It was the third chart single for Gibb, his third of six Top 10 hits, and his third and final #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada and Brazil, peaked at #42 in Great Britain, at #11 on Billboard’s soul chart, was Billboard’s #1 song of the year, and ranked 49th on Billboard’s 60th Anniversary Hot 100 in 2018. Gibb co-wrote the song with his brothers, the Bee Gees.

I got up to go to the Building Department to make a copy of the estimate and Glenn was yapping…I left the office and he was still yapping…I return to the office and he is still yapping!!!…I am not making that up!!!…He was talking to himself the whole time I was gone!!!

In 1314 – Scottish troops led by King Robert the Bruce defeat English troops led by King Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn in central Scotland during the First War of Scottish Independence. Despite the win, and a later victory at Berwick, Edward II did not renounce his claim to Scotland and the war did not end until Edward II was replaced by his son Edward III in 1328. England was so intent on Scottish independence that the Second War of Scottish Independence was fought from 1332-57.
In 2005 – The San Antonio Spurs win the NBA title defeating the Detroit Pistons 81-74 to win the series in seven games. It was the third of five NBA titles for the Spurs and was the fifth loss for the Pistons in eight trips to the Finals. The Pistons were the defending champions and the series was the first to go seven games since the Houston Rockets defeated New York Knicks in 1994. Spurs’ forward Tim Duncan was named the MVP of the series.
In 1990 – Roxette is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with It Must’ve Been Love. The song went to #1 in six other countries, including Zimbabwe and Norway, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s second-biggest song of the year. It was the fifth of nine top 40 hits for the group, their fourth of six Top 10s, and their third of four #1s. The song peaked at #6 in their native Sweden.

She’s yapping the whole time, too…It’s unreal…She’s apologizing left and right, she’ll just be a minute; she knows right where they are and who knows what else because after a while you tend to ignore the torrent…She’s completely batty, too, as opposed to merely being a ditz…A ditz you can work with; a ditz is funny and adaptable, someone who will shoot a spitwad at you at a diner and share a wine pairing with you at a 5-star restaurant…

History’s long march.
In 1807 – The USS Chesapeake and HMS Leopard engage in a brief battle off the coast of Virginia, an incident History refers to as the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair. The crew of the Leopold caught Chesapeake by surprise and attacked and boarded in search of British deserters, ultimately taking four prisoners. President Thomas Jefferson was never able to solve the matter diplomatically, leading to the Embargo Act of 1807
In 1889 – The Louisville Colonels of the American Association lose their major league record 26th and final consecutive game in 7-3 loss to the St Louis Browns. The streak had started on May 22 with an 11-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles and would end the following day with a 7-3 win over the Browns. The Colonels broke the record of 17 consecutive losses established by the Cincinnati Red Stockings of the National League in 1876 and their record still stands.
In 1985 – Freddie Jackson is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Black Singles chart – for the fourth of six consecutive weeks with Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake). It was the first of 18 hits on the soul chart for Jackson and his first ten #1s. The song also peaked at #18 in both the US and Great Britain and was Billboard’s biggest soul song of the year. Jackson was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist, losing out to Sade.

History’s long march.
In 1621 – The Austrian House of Habsburg executes 27 Bohemians in the town square of Prague, now the capital of the Czech Republic and then the capital of Bohemia. The 27 were executed for their part in the Bohemian Revolt of 1618 and had started the Thirty Years’ War. Most were beheaded, but some were hanged and some had tongues and other body parts cut off prior to execution. Today the execution site is marked with 27 white crosses inlaid in the gray bricks of the town square.
In 1938 – Pinky Higgins of the Boston Red Sox ties the major league record for most consecutive hits in 8-3 and 5-4 wins over the Detroit Tigers. Higgins went 4-for-4 in both games giving him twelve consecutive hits to tie the mark established by Johnny Kling of the Chicago Cubs in 1902 and the mark was tied in 1952 by Walt Dropo of the Tigers and still stands. The streak had begun on June 19 and ended the following day when Higgins went 0-for-4 against the Tigers.
In 1952 – Hank Thompson is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores country chart – a predecessor to today’s country chart – for the sixth of 15 consecutive weeks with The Wild Side of Life. It was the sixth of 31 country Top 10 hits for Thompson and the first of three #1 songs in a career that spanned from 1948-83. The song also went to #1 on Billboard’s Most Played by Disc Jockeys and Most Played in Jukeboxes charts.

History’s long march.
In 1837 – Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom assumes the throne following the death of her uncle William IV. Victoria married her cousin Albert, a prince from what is now Germany, in 1920, and produced nine children. Victoria died in 1801 then the longest-serving British monarch, and her descendants included two British kings, queens of Greece, Norway, and Romania, and assorted princes and princesses.
In 1936 and 1968 – Jesse Owens, Ben Hines, Ronnie Ray Smith, and Charles Greene, all of the US, establish or tie 100-meter world records at meets in Chicago and Sacramento. Owens ran 10.2 seconds at the NCAA championships to break the mark of 10.3 seconds while Hines and Smith ran 9.9 seconds in the first semifinal at the AAU National Championships while Green equaled it minutes later in the second semifinal, a night History refers to as the Night of Speed. Hines would lower the mark to 9.95 at the Mexico City Olympics in August.
In 1981 – Stars in 45 us at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Medley: Intro Venus/Sugar Sugar/No Reply/I’ll Be Back/Drive My Car/Do You Want to Know a Secret/We Can Work It Out/I Should Have Known Better/Nowhere Man/You’re Going To Lose That Girl/Stars on 45. It was the first of two Top 40 hits for the group and remains their only #1 song, and went to #1 in eleven other countries including Denmark and West Germany, and peaked at #2 in England. With 41 words, it has the longest title of any #1 song on a Billboard pop chart and the song broke up the nine-week run at the top by Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes.
