The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow decides to lay off coffee for a while. Today’s Diary.
One, the new morning juicing routine is providing sufficient get-up-and-go…Two, maybe eliminating it will reduce yours truly going to the bathroom every five minutes, which has been the norm recently…I went with something called Pero, a blend of barley, rye, and chicory that tastes no worse nor no better than the retailer’s donut shop knockoff coffee.

In 1992 – Rioting begins in Los Angeles following the acquittal of four Los Angeles police officers in their trial in the Rodney King beatings. The verdicts were issued at 3:15 pm and the violence was underway within an hour. The riots lasted until May 3 and resulted in 63 deaths, 2,383 injuries, over 12,000 arrests and over $1 billion in damage and wasn’t quelled until state and federal troops plus federal law enforcement officers were called in. Two of the officers were later found guilty in a civil trial.
In 1876 – John Carbine of the Louisville Grays establishes a new major league record for most errors in a game by a first baseman in a 6-2 loss to the St Louis Brown Stockings. Carbine had five errors to establish a mark that has been tied several times and still stands and research into whose record he broke was inconclusive. Depending on when the other games that day started, it was either the ninth, tenth, or eleventh game in National League history and remains the oldest record in the major league record book.
In 1995 – Montell Jordan is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third of seven consecutive weeks with This Is How We Do It. It was the first of eight Top 40 hits for Williams and remains his only #1 song. The song also peaked at #11 in Great Britain, was in its fifth of seven consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – his first of three #1 soul hits – and was Billboard’s 10th-biggest song of the year. Today Jordan is retired from the music business and is involved in Christian ministry in Atlanta.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Thursday, April 28
It was a solid Level 1 cleaning at The Shire this morning…Per new, recent, policy, dishes were washed immediately after morning juice, along with the juicer parts…I don’t think I’m eating very well tho; the only things needing to be washed were some utensils and coffee cups…A pretty thorough vacuuming, tho, was accomplished, which I know the cat appreciated as much as I did.

In 1945 – The final Nazi gas chamber executions are carried out at the Mauthausen concentration camp in what is now northern Austria. These were the waning days of Word War II in Europe: German dictator Adolf Hitler would kill himself on April 30, the camp would be liberated by elements of the US Army on May 5, and Germany surrendered on May 7. In 1946 and 1947 a war crimes tribunal tried 69 former camp staff members, with 53 being executed after conviction.
In 1990 – The Boston Celtics establish a new NBA playoff record for most points in a game in a 157-128 victory over the New York Knicks in game two of their opening-round series. The Celtics broke the record of 156 points established by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1970 Eastern Conference semifinals and their record still stands. The win gave the Celtics a two games to zero lead over the Knicks, though the Knicks won the series in five games.
In 1979 – Peaches and Herb are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the first of four consecutive weeks with Reunited. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #4 in Great Britain, would later spend four weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, and was Billboard’s 5th-biggest song of the year. It was the second Top 40 hit for the duo with Linda Greene as Peaches and remains the duo’s only #1 song. Herb Fame first charted under this name in 1967 with Francine Barker as Peaches.

In 711 – The Umayyad Caliphate’s conquest of the Iberian Peninsula begins when Moorish troops land at Gibraltar. The campaign would last eight years, concluding with Umayyad forces crossing the Pyrenees in 719. Christian kingdoms would gradually establish themselves over the centuries and the last Muslim stronghold in Granada was taken in 1492 with Muslims – and later Jews – obliged to either convert or face expulsion and property loss.
In 1908 – The London Summer Olympics open at White City Stadium. 1,971 men and 37 from 22 nations competed with Great Britain winning the most overall (146) and gold (56) medals. It remains the final Olympics where pistol dueling was contested. A demonstration sport in 1908, it had been a medal sport at the 1906 Intercalated Games. Duels featured wax bullets and significant protection for contestants. It was the first of three Summer Games hosted by London (1948, 2012).
In 1991 – Amy Grant is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Baby Baby. It was the third of eight Top 40 hits for Grant, her second of four Top 10 hits, and remains her only #1 song. The song also peaked at #2 in Great Britain, went to #1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart, peaked at #23 on its dance chart, and was Billboard’s tenth-biggest song of the year. Grant co-wrote the song with multi-Grammy Award winner Keith Thomas, who also produced it.

In other automotive news, the washer fluid was replaced and, despite the impending warmer weather, yours truly went with the washer fluid rated down to minus-20…Recall last year an early freeze caught ol’ Sparrow by surprise and the summer washer fluid actually froze, a lousy break that will be avoided this year by keeping cold-rated washer fluid in the reservoir all year long.

In 1962 – The United States reaches the moon for the first time, the second country to do so, when Ranger 4 crashes into the moon’s far side. Ranger 4 had been launched on April 23 and was equipped with a variety of instruments for experiments before crashing into the moon, but solar panels failed to deploy and the spacecraft eventually ran out of electrical power. The first country to reach the moon was the Soviet Union, whose Luna 2 crashed into the moon in 1959.
In 1920 – Canada wins the first Olympic ice hockey gold medal, defeating Sweeden 12-0 in the gold medal game of the Antwerp Summer Games. Two days later the US won the silver medal defeating Czechoslovakia 16-0 and on the 29th the Czechs defeated Sweden 1-0 for the bronze medal. It was the first of nine Olympic hockey titles for Canada and this remains the only ice hockey played at the Summer Olympics. Figure skating was also contested this week, while the other Olympic events began in August, and the Winter Olympics began in 1924.
In 1980 – Blondie is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of six consecutive weeks with Call Me. It was the fifth of ten chart singles for the group, their fourth of eight Top 40 hits, and their second of four #1 songs. Call Me also went to #1 in Canada in Great Britain and was Billboard’s #1 song of the year, its eighth-biggest of the decade, and ranked 57th on their 60th Anniversary Hot 100 in 2018. In 1988, a remixed version peaked at #61 in Great Britain.

In 1960 – The USS Triton (SSRN-586) completes History’s first submerged circumnavigation of the globe near the point where it started, near Saint Peter and Saint Paul Rocks in the Atlantic Ocean about a third of the way between South America and Africa. The voyage had begun on Feb 24 and Triton sailed 26,723 nautical miles at an average speed of 18 knots and crossed the equator four times. Triton was commanded by Capt. Edward Beach, Jr.
In 1876 – The Chicago Cubs, then known as the White Stockings, play their first game, a 4-0 win over the Louisville Grays, a game that was also the first shutout in National League history. The Cubs finished the season with a 52-14 record, winning their first of 17 National League pennants, and have also won three World Series titles, the most recent in 2016. As of today, the Cubs have an all-time record of 11,096 wins, 10,530 losses, and 161 ties. The Cubs remain the only charter National League team still playing in their original city.
In 1953 – Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers soul chart – a predecessor to today’s soul chart – for the second of eight consecutive weeks with Hound Dog. The song was also in its first of five consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul Juke Box chart and remains her only chart appearance. Thornton was one of several witnesses when singer Johnny Ace accidentally shot and killed himself between sets of a show in Houston in 1954 and in 1956 Elvis Presley’s version of Hound Dog went to #1 on Billboard pop, soul, and country charts.
