She was lying on my back when I rustled at 2230 to use the can and she thought Daddy was up for good and started running the prospect of her morning canned yummy ration up the flagpole…Well, Daddy wasn’t up for good and went back to bed and while the cat knows better than to meow in the bedroom, she was standing post in the kitchen discussing matters and there was still more and good sleep to get, so Daddy shut the bedroom door.

History’s long march.
In 1776 – The Second Continental Congress appoints what History refers to as the Committee of Five to draft a declaration of independence from Great Britain, appointing John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingstone, Thomas Jefferson, and Roger Sherman. The committee had the good sense to leave most of the work to Jefferson and the Declaration was approved on July 4, two days after Congress declared independence from Great Britain, and remains one of mankind’s seminal works.
In 1956 – The Melbourne Summer Olympics begin with the equestrian competition in Stockholm, with 158 athletes from 29 nations competing. This was due to quarantine laws for horses in Australia that made holding the competition there impractical and the Melbourne Games would begin in full in November. Competition in Stockholm would conclude on the 17th and this remains the only time events at the same Olympiad have been held on different continents.
In 1978 – The O’Jays are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the third of five consecutive weeks with Used ta Be My Girl. The song also went #12 pop in Great Britain, peaked at #4 on the Hot 100, and was the seventh of eight #1 soul songs for the group. The song was written by the team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, who were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.

History’s long march.
In 1959 – The USS George Washington (SSBN-578), the world’s first nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, is launched in Groton, Connecticut. She was commissioned in December and conducted her first missile tests the following summer and her first refueling came in 1970, after having sailed over 100,000 nautical miles, about 115,000 statute miles. The George Washington last sailed as a ballistic missile submarine in 1983 to facilitate American compliance with the SALT I treaty and was decommissioned in 1985.
In 1973 – Secretariat, ridden by Ron Turcotte, wins the Belmont Stakes, becoming the ninth horse, and the first in 25 years, to win the Triple Crown. Secretariat defeated Twice A Prince by 31 lengths, running the mile-and-half in 2 minutes, 24 seconds, a mark that remains the American record for that distance on dirt. Secretariat paid $2.20 to win, $2.40 to place while show money was not paid out.
In 1979 – Sister Sledge is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the only week with We Are Family. The song also went #1 pop in Canada, #8 pop in Great Britain, and spent two weeks at #2 on the Hot 100. It was the second chart single for the group, their first of three Top 40 hits, and was their second and final soul #1 (He’s The Greatest Dancer, one week, 1979). The song was written by Chic co-founders Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers.

History’s long march.
In 1968 – James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King, Jr., is arrested at London’s Heathrow Airport. Ray had killed King on April 4 in Memphis before fleeing to Canada and living there under an assumed name and was arrested after the assumed name turned up on a watchlist. Ray pled guilty the following year and was sentenced to 99-years in prison, with an extra year added after a 1977 escape. Ray died of complications from Hepatitis C in 1998.
In 1968 – Don Drysdale of the Los Angeles Dodgers establishes a new major league record for most consecutive scoreless innings pitched in a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. In the second inning, Drysdale broke the record of 55 that had been established by Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators in 1913 and extended the mark to 58 before the Phillies scored a run in the fifth. The mark is now held by Orel Hershiser, also of the Dodgers, who pitched 59 consecutive scoreless innings in 1988.
In 2019 – Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the ninth of a Hot 100 record 19 consecutive weeks with Old Town Road. The song was also in its eighth of a record 20 consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, peaked at #19 on Billboard’s country chart, was their biggest song of the year, and their seventh-biggest of the decade. It was Lil Nas X’s first chart single and first of three #1 songs and remains Cyrus’ only #1 pop song and he joined Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, and Ray Charles as acts who have #1 pop, soul, and country songs in the Hot 100 era.

Billboard Hot 100 record for most self-replacements at #1 is two, done by the Beatles in 1964 when I Want To Hold Your Hand was followed at #1 by She Loves You and Can’t Buy Me Love.
Editor’s Note: In 2021, BTS replaced themselves twice at #1, however, it was with two songs. Butter was replaced at #1 with Permission to Dance, with Butter returning to the top the following week. It remains the only time in Hot 100 history an act replaced themselves at #1 in consecutive weeks.

…the latest box of French vanilla creamer we opened this morning – with the knife, of course – was not our usual brand, it was the B brand (thank God it wasn’t the C brand) and a quick check of the storage rack showed there were a couple of other B brands lying in wait to be foisted on the public.

History’s long march.
In 1776 – Richard Henry Lee of Virginia introduces a resolution in the Second Continental Congress declaring the 13 American colonies “are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States”, known to History as the Lee Resolution. The United States would declare its independence from Great Britain on July 2 when Congress passed the resolution, with the Declaration of Independence being approved two days later.
In 1981 – Bjorn Borg of Sweden wins the French Open, defeating Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. It was the sixth French Open title for Borg and his eleventh and final Grand Slam title. Borg’s other five Grand Slam titles came at Wimbledon, which he won from 1976-80. Borg also lost in four US Open championship matches and Lendl would go on to win the French Open in 1984, 1986, and 1987.
In 1941 – Jimmy Dorsey is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Selling Singles chart – a predecessor to the Hot 100 – for the only week with My Sister and I. It was the third of seven #1 songs for Dorsey on this chart and the first of two times Dorsey replaced himself at #1. My Sister and I replaced Amapola at #1 and was replaced by Maria Elena the following week, the first time an act had replaced themself twice at the top of a Billboard chart. The mark would be topped later in the year by Glenn Miller, who replaced himself at #1 three times.

History’s long march.
In 1942 – The United States Navy sinks four Japanese aircraft carriers and a cruiser at the Battle of Midway in the North Pacific Ocean. The battle had started on June 4 and ended the following day with a decisive American victory that weakened the Japanese Navy for the rest of the war while most American losses were later replaced.. The battle took place about 1,100 miles northwest of Hawaii and the Japanese surrendered to the Americans in August 1945.
In 1939 – The New York Giants establish a new major league record for most home runs in an inning in a 17-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at the Polo Grounds in New York City. The Giants hit five home runs in the fourth inning off of two Cincinnati pitchers – all with two out – and research into whose record they broke was inconclusive. The mark has been tied several times since, most recently by the Houston Astros this past May.
In 1981 – Razzy Bailey is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Friends. It was the third of four consecutive and five #1 country hits overall for Bailey in a chart career that last from 1966-91. The B side, Anywhere There’s a Jukebox also charted and the record is considered a double-sided hit. In 1984 Bailey took a version of Knock On Wood to #29 on the country chart, making the song one of the few songs to chart on Billboard’s pop, soul, and country charts.
