Also, there’s a For Sale on the lot kitty-corner to The Shire…It’s vacant, tho there are some cement pads on it, indicating it used to be home to trailers or mobile homes…It’s been vacant since The Ex and I bought The Shire in 2014, tho, and is listed at 285K for a quarter of an acre, a bit larger than The Shire’s fifth of an acre.

History’s long march.
In 69 AD – Roman Emperor Marcus Otho ends his reign, committing suicide after losing the First Battle of Bedriacum in northern Italy during the Roman Civil War. In January, Otho had succeeded Galba, and he was succeeded by the general who defeated him, Vitellius, who reigned until December, when he was executed and succeeded by Vespasian, a period History refers to as the Year of the Four Emperors. Vespasian brought some stability to the throne, reigning for ten years.
In 1954 – The Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup, defeating the defending champion Montreal Canadiens 2-1 in overtime at Olympia Stadium in Detroit. It was the sixth of eleven Stanley Cup titles for the Red Wings and was the fourth of eight losses in the finals for the Canadiens. The game remains the second and final time the seventh game of the Stanley Cup Finals has been decided in overtime.
In 1977 – David Soul is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Don’t Give Up On Us. The song went to #1 in five other countries, including Ireland and Great Britain, and also went to #1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary chart. The song spent 19 weeks on the Hot 100, including seven weeks in the Top 10, and was Billboard’s 29th-biggest song of the year. It was the first chart single for Soul – who was starring in TV’s Starsky and Hutch at the time – and remains his only Top 40 hit.

Right as yours truly is putting the finishing touches on Morning Coffee Service (MCS), this older, sort of scruffy looking lady enters the lobby and takes great strides not to get within ten feet of me…She announced a taxi is coming by to pick her up but she could use a toothbrush and toothpaste, which explained why she was keeping her distance because she was also covering her mouth as if her breath was notoriously noxious and could be smelled at distance…

History’s long march.
In 1865 – President Abraham Lincoln dies at a private residence in Washington, DC after having been shot the night before at Ford’s Theater. Lincoln was succeeded by Vice President Andrew Johnson who, taking over in a time Lincoln himself would’ve found challenging, would eventually be impeached by the House of Representatives, acquitted by a single vote in his Senate trial, and was not nominated for reelection. Johnson had also been targeted for assassination, but his assigned killer had chosen to get drunk instead.
In 1968 – The Houston Astros and New York Mets establish a new major league record for the longest shutout in a 24-inning, 1-0 Houston win. The winning run was scored when a groundball went through the legs of shortstop Al Weiss and the teams broke the record of 21 innings established the year before by the San Francisco Giants and the Cincinnati Reds. The game took 6 hours and 6 minutes to complete and each team had 79 at-bats, eleven hits, one error, and left 16 runners on base.
In 1967 – Frank and Nancy Sinatra are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of four consecutive weeks with Somethin’ Stupid. It was the ninth and final #1 song on a Billboard pop chart for Frank and was the second and final #1 song for Nancy. The song went to #1 in seven other countries, including Norway and Great Britain, was Billboard’s seventh-biggest song of the year, and remains the only father/daughter #1 song on a Billboard pop chart.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow reports he may not be able to get the first lawn mowing of the season in on Thursday. Today’s Diary.
The snow is scheduled to continue thru Wednesday and perhaps even into Thursday and even if it’s sunny Thusday it will still be cold and the lawn will still be soaked…Under these circumstances, which include ol’ Sparrow’s natural inclination to put things off, Lawn Care Thursday might well be delayed a week.

History’s long march.
In 1861 – In the Civil War, Union Army troops surrender Fort Sumter, off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina, to Confederate forces. The Confederate bombardment had begun the previous day and while the fort was defended by 60 guns, there were insufficient men to fire them, and they lacked fuses for cannonballs, so only metal shot could be fired. South Carolina had seceded from the Union in December and had since been demanding the Union vacate the fort.
In 1914 – The Federal League plays its first game, a 3-2 win by the Baltimore Terrapins over the Buffalo Blues. It was the first major league game played in Baltimore since 1902, after which the American League Orioles moved to New York and became the Yankees and was the first major league appearance by a Buffalo team since the Bisons left the National League after the 1885 season. The Federal League folded after the 1915 season and remains the last major league to play a game outside of the National and American leagues.
In 1985 – USA For Africa is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of four consecutive weeks with We Are the World. The song went to #1 in many other countries, including Norway and Great Britain, peaked at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, at #76 on Billboard’s country chart, and was Billboard’s 20th-biggest song of the year. A rather dull argument can be had debating whether or not the group is entitled to ultimate one-hit-wonder status as an act whose only chart single goes to #1. Yes, their only chart single went to #1; no, because this was their only recording and everyone involved had chart careers of their own.

History’s long march.
In 1204 – The city of Constantinople, then part of the Byzantine empire and controlled by Orthodox Christians, is sacked by Catholics in the Fourth Crusade. The city was founded in 330 AD and named for Emperor Constantine the Great and was renamed Istanbul – now the capital of Turkey – in 1930. The Crusades lasted from 1095 to 1291 and the Fourth Crusade had been called by Pope Innocent III two years earlier and was originally an attempt to reclaim Jerusalem from the Muslims. After the sack, Byzantines dispersed and regained the city in 1261.
In 1965 – The Houston Astrodome – originally known as the Harris County Domed Stadium and the world’s first domed, multi-purpose stadium – hosts its first regular-season game, a 2-0 win by the Philadelphia Phillies over the Houston Astros. Over the years the Astrodome would host 2,782 Astros games as well as 223 Houston Oilers games as well as, among other things, the Bluebonnet Bowl. The Oilers became the Tennessee Titans in 1997 and the Astros moved to Minute Maid Park in 2000.
In 1958 – The Champs are at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart – one of several predecessors to the Hot 100 – for the fourth of five consecutive weeks with Tequila. It was the first of eight chart singles for the group, their first of four Top 40 hits and remains their only #1 song. The song was also in its third of four consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart and was originally the B side of a single of a song that never charted.

I had thrown my right hand over my head so the pillow could be adjusted for maximum comfort and BOOM the middle finger was banged pretty good on the end of the couch…After some initial weeping and using the name of the Son of Man in a manner inconsistent with praise, I realized there was neither blood nor bones visible, manned up, and pressed on reading and the book was, in fact, finished a bit after noon.

History’s long march.
In 1951 – President Harry Truman fires General Douglas MacArthur as Supreme Commander, Allied Powers, as commander of United Nations forces in Korea, and of other assorted commands. While MacArthur had orchestrated the Inchon invasion and remained popular despite some recent setbacks, he was relieved for public statements that contradicted US policy and for ignoring orders. He was replaced by General Matthew Ridgway and while an armistice ended combat in 1953, the two Koreas remain technically at war.
In 1965 – Jack Nicklaus wins the Masters, shooting a final round 69 to beat Gary Player and Arnold Palmer at Augusta National Golf Club. It was the second of a record six Masters titles for Nicklaus and his fourth of a record 18 major titles. Nicklaus shot a tournament-record 17-under par 271 to win by nine strokes, which is also a tournament record. Nicklaus also won US Amateur titles in 1959 and 1961 and the NCAA title in 1961.
In 1987 – Starship is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now. The song also went to #1 in four other countries including Portugal and Great Britain and was Billboard’s fifth-biggest song of the year. It was the third and final #1 song for the group which had first charted in 1967 as the Jefferson Airplane. The song was co-written by Diane Warren and Albert Hammond.
