The Diary of a Nobody – At the hotel, Sparrow deals with a guy who’s crackers. Today’s Diary.

It was about midnight and this nitwit rings the bell like he’s alerting ships at sea and I go out and there’s a tall mid-20ish guy in a t-shirt and towel around his waist that he’s fidgeting with in a manner that personally made me uncomfortable…Somewhat wary of the answer, I ask how I can be of service…

The long march to today.

In 1420 – The Forbidden Palace in Beijing is completed and is declared the capital of the Ming Dynasty. The Ming Dynasty lasted until the middle of the 17th-century and the palace housed 24 Chinese emperors until 1912 and the complex consists of 980 buildings, 8,886 rooms and draws an average of 14 million visitors annually. Valued at $70 billion, it is reckoned to be the most valuable piece of real estate in the world. Construction began in 1406 and required over one million laborers.

In 1934 – The Pittsburgh Pirates – now the Steelers – and the Brooklyn Dodgers establish a new NFL record for fewest penalties in a game in 21-3 Dodgers’ victory. The team combined for zero penalties, to break the record of one done several times. The record has been matched three times since, the last time in a 1940 game between the Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles.

In 1978 – Nick Gilder is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Hot Child in the City. The song was in its 21st week on the Hot 100, a record for the longest climb to #1 that would be broken in 1982 by Chariots of Fire by Vangelis, which took 22 weeks to reach #1 and the mark is now held by Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You, which took 35 weeks to reach #1 in nine separate chart runs between 2000 and 2019. The song also went to #1 in Canada and remains Gilder’s only Top 40 hit.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question

Herb Alpert’s biggest hit on Billboard’s soul chart was Diamonds with Lisa Keith and Janet Jackson, which spent two weeks at #1 in 1987. The song also peaked at #5 on the Hot 100.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow declines to take a check. Today’s Diary.

He came in and he looked and acted flighty, too, and it wasn’t a shocker when his debit card was declined…He didn’t have another one and he asked if we took cash or checks and I said yes to cash, no to a check, which is not only hotel policy, but a sensible one when a debit card is declined…

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 9 – Detroit is (still) firmly in command in the race for the most coveted trophy in sports, The Dan Henning Trophy.

Lions 66th NFL team to start season 0-7…

B-10 pollsters “pretty sure” Texans first NFL team to score zero (0), three (3) and five (5) points during six (6)-game losing skid in “like, a really long time and stuff”…

Whatevers have only lost three (3) straight, but looking to make big B-10 splash as favorable schedule shows only one (1) game remaining against teams ranked in this week’s survey…

The long march to today.

In 939 – Athelstan, regarded by History, as the first king of England dies at Glouster in southwest England. Athelstan had succeeded his father King Edward the Elder, as king of the Anglo-Saxons in 924 and had become king of all England in 927 after conquering York. A lifelong bachelor, Athelstan was succeeded by his half-brother Edmund I. During his reign, Athelstan was known for his concern over crime and for marrying off sisters to other European monarchs.

In 1963 – Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings ties the NHL record for most goals in a career in a 6-4 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Howe’s 3rd-period goal was the 544th of his career to tie the record established by Maurice Richard of the Canadiens from 1942-60. Howe would break the mark on November 10 and would retire for good after the 1980 season with 801 goals. The record is now held by Wayne Gretzky, who had 894 goals from 1978-99.

In 1979 – Herb Alpert is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Rise. It was the second #1 hit for Alpert (This Guy’s In Love With You, four weeks, 1968) and Alpert remains the only person in Hot 100 history to hit #1 with both vocal and instrumental songs. The song also peaked at #13 in Great Britain, at #4 on Billboard’s soul chart and due to when it charted was Billboard’s 80th biggest song of 1979 and its 54th biggest of 1980.

The long march to today.

In 1774 – The First Continental Congress of what would become the United States of America adjourns at Carpenters’ Hall in Philadelphia. Every colony but Georgia sent delegates after the British blockaded Boston Harbor and passed what rich, white colonists called the Intolerable Acts. The Congress, among other things, agreed on a trade boycott against Britain, which resulted in British imports falling 97% in 1775. Carpenters’ Hall still stands, still owned by the carpenter’s guild that built it in 1771.

In 1968 – George Foreman of the US wins the Olympic heavyweight boxing gold medal at the Mexico City Games. Foreman went 4-0 in the tournament and defeated Jonas Cepulis of the Soviet Union in the gold medal bout. Foreman was the last American to win the Olympic heavyweight gold medal until Henry Tillman at the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Foreman would win the world heavyweight title twice and at 46 remains the oldest to hold the crown.

In 1974 – Dionne Warwick and the Spinners are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Then Came You. It was the first #1 song for both acts and Warwick’s first Top 10 hit since 1969. The song also peaked at #29 in Great Britain and at #2 on Billboard’s soul chart. The song remains the Spinners’ only #1 pop hit and Warwick would hit #1 in 1985 with That’s What Friends Are For, a song she sang with Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Gladys Knight.

Billy Kilmer was the San Francisco 49er who fumbled the ball that Jim Marshall recovered and ran the wrong way into his own endzone. Kilmer, then a halfback, had caught a pass from John Brodie.

The plus side to all this, of course, was Sparrow’s All-Access Key (SAAK) went operational for the first time…Sure, it was field-tested last night, but tonite was the first time it had to be used in connection with actual hotel duties (AHD).

The long march to today.

In 1415 – The British, led by King Henry V, defeat the French in the Battle of Agincourt in northern France, part of the Hundred Years’ War. The French lost despite outnumbering the British a bit less than two-to-one and French King Charles VI did not participate due to an incapacitating mental illness. The defeat was devastating for the French, with some noting the casualty list read like a who’s who of French nobility. Despite the setback, France would win the war in 1453. The war had begun in 1337, though there had been peace since 1389.

In 1964 – Jim Marshall of the Minnesota Vikings commits one of the most endearing bloopers in NFL history, running a fumble 66-yards into the Viking endzone in a 27-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. The play came in the fourth quarter of a game in San Francisco after a pass play when Marshall picked up the fumble at his team’s 34-yard line and confidently began running the wrong way. Marshall was free to run the ball out of the end zone however he elected to toss the ball out of bounds, which resulted in a safety for the 49ers.

In 1980 – Don Williams is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the second and final consecutive week with I Believe in You. The song also went #1 country in Canada, peaked at #24 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and remains Williams’ only pop hit. It was the eleventh of 17 #1 country hits for Williams in a chart career that spanned from 1973-92. His last appearance in the country Top 10 came in 1991 when Lord Have Mercy on a Country Boy peaked at #7.
