A ranking of some things.

1. House Settlement – Settlement between former NCAA athletes and NCAA and five major conferences changes everything and changes nothing because various sources have paid college athletes since the first Harvard/Yale regatta in 1852…The only thing changing is now colleges can legally make the disbursement themselves. 

2. House Settlement II – You think college sports are confusing now, wait until this is fully implemented…Shorthanded, it means colleges can now distribute over $20 million to their athletes however they want…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” athletes will sooner or later figure out this is nothing more than a salary cap, organize, and collectively bargain a fairer share of the billions they generate. 

3. Colorado Rockies – The new 3-hole staple…Rockies quest for worst MLB winning percentage ever (.130, Cleveland Spiders, 1899) takes big hit with first 3-game sweep of 2025…Still though, Rockies become first ML team to ever lose 50 games before winning their tenth and current “win” percentage of .187 would be good for 3rd-best ever if season ended today. 

4. Drug Decriminalization – Media gaga over recent confiscation of 13 tons of drugs in Peru, but consider this: if drugs were legalized, or at least decriminalized, then current arch-criminals immediately become vendors selling a product there is strong worldwide demand for…You do this, and violence associated with drugs disappear and cops can work on fighting real crime.

In 1783 – The Laki volcano in Iceland begins and eight-month eruption. The eruption contaminated Iceland’s soil and killed half the cattle population, killed over 9,000 and started a seven-year famine. The eruption also affected European and African weather patterns, resulting in, among other things, poisonous clouds over Europe and a lower Nile River flow, which led to a famine in Egypt the following year. 

In 1950 – The St Louis Browns establish new major league records for most runs and most hits allowed in consecutive games in a 29-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox. The Browns established a record of 49 runs allowed, following a 20-4 loss to the Red Sox the previous day, and they gave up 51 hits in the two games. Research into whose records they broke was inconclusive, and the records still stand.

In 2019 – Lil Naz X and Billy Ray Cyrus are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the ninth of a record 19 consecutive weeks with Old Town Road. The song went to #1 in 18 other countries, including China, Norway, and Great Britain, was in its ninth of a record 20 consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and also peaked at #19 on their country chart until the magazine stopped considering it a country song. It was the first of three #1s for Lil Naz X and remains Cyrus’ only #1 pop hit.

In 1776 – Richard Henry Lee, a representative from Virginia in the 2nd Continental Congress, presents a resolution that the Colonies should be independent from Great Britain. The motion was seconded by John Adams and would be approved by the Congress on July 2, with the Declaration of Independence approved on July 4. History refers to the motion as the Lee Resolution and Lee later served as president of the Congress under the Articles of Confederation and a US Senator. 

In 1936 – The Cleveland Indians establish the American League record for the longest game without striking out in a 5-4, 16-inning loss to the New York Yankees. Yankee pitcher Red Ruffing went the distance, getting the Indians out in nine different ways, none of them on strikes. The mark was tied by the Philadelphia A’s in 1943, and the all-time major league record is 17, done twice, by the New York Giants in 1893 and the Cincinnati Reds in 1920.

In 1969 – The Beatles with Billy Preston are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third of five consecutive weeks with Get Back. It was the 17th of a Hot 100 record 20 #1 songs by the group and the first of three #1s for Preston. The song went to #1 in 13 other countries, including New Zealand, Norway, and Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 25th-biggest song of the year.

In 1965 – Gemini 4, the first multiple-day manned mission by the US, takes off from Cape Kennedy, Florida. Commanded by James McDivitt and piloted by Ed White, the mission spent four days in space and orbited Earth 66 times and included White’s first spacewalk by an American. The crew tried to rendezvous with the rocket that launched it, but failed. McDivitt later commanded Apollo 9, while White died in the Apollo 1 fire. 

In 1929 – Helen Wills wins the French Open, defeating Simonne Mathieu 6-3, 6-4. It was the second of four French Open titles for Wills, her ninth of 19 Grand Slam singles titles and her 19th of a then-record 31 overall Grand Slam titles. It was the first of six runner-up finishes for Mathieu, who would win titles in 1938 and 1939. Wills also had paintings entered in the art competition at the 1932 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. 

In 1944 – Bing Crosby is at #1 on Billboard’s National Best Selling Retail Records chart – their first pop singles chart and a predecessor to the Hot 100 – for the fifth and final consecutive week with I Love You. It was the tenth of 13 #1s for Crosby on assorted American pop charts, his fourth of eight on a Billboard chart, and the song also went to #1 on Billboard’s Most Played Juke Box Records chart.

In 1774 – The Quartering Act of 1774 takes effect in the American colonies, authorizing the government to quarter troops in unoccupied buildings if suitable quarters weren’t otherwise available. It was the fourth of five acts History refers to as the Intolerable Acts passed by Parliament after the Boston Tea Party in December 1773. The 3rd Amendment to the Constitution was a direct result of this and the Quartering Act of 1765. 

In 1996 – Annika Sorenstam of Sweden wins the US Women’s Open by six strokes over Kris Tschetter in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Sorenstam shot a final round 66 to earn her second of three US Open titles and her second of ten major wins and remains the highest finish in a major for Tschetter. Sorenstam became the sixth of seven women to win consecutive US Opens. 

In 2013 – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Ray Dalton are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the third of five consecutive weeks with Can’t Hold Us. The song went to #1 in three other countries, including Poland, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, was in its fifth of seven consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, was Billboard’s 5th-biggest pop song of the year, and its 3rd-biggest soul song. It was the first of two #1 s for Macklamore & Ryan Lewis and remains the only Hot 100 appearance for Dalton, making him one of 19 acts whose only chart single went to #1.
