…he feigns wonderment…[and] then asks if we will have to kill him now and we chuckle and face him with both hands up as if they were claws ready to attack.

In 1863 – The first military draft in the United States begins, to help man the Union Army in the Civil War. Of the 2.2 million men who served in the Union, about 8% were either draftees or their substitutes, which could be purchased for $300, about $7,200 in today’s money. A similar proposal in the Confederacy failed, with protesters complaining that – get this – a draft was just like slavery. Previously in the US, states had conscripted residents, with indifferent success, to fill spaces in their militias and an attempt to conduct a draft during the War of 1812 was blocked by Congress.

In 1887 – Lottie Dod of Great Britain wins the Wimbledon ladies’ single title, defeating defending champion Blanche Bingley (Great Britain) 6-2, 6-0. It was the first of five Wimbledon titles for Dodd and was the second of seven runner-up finishes for Bingley, who also won six titles. Dod was 15 at the time and remains the youngest Grand Slam champion ever. She won the Ladies British Amateur golf championship in 1904, the first and only woman to win both tournaments.

In 2019 – Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the 13th of a Hot 100 record 19 consecutive weeks with Old Town Road. The song went to #1 in 18 other countries, including China, Norway, and Great Britain, and was also in its 13th of a record 20 consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, a mark now held by Kill Bill by SZA (21 weeks, 2022-23). It was the first of three #1s for Lil Nas X and remains Cyrus’ only #1 pop hit. Cyrus joined Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers, and Ray Charles as the only acts to have #1 songs on the Hot 100 and Billboard country and soul charts.

In 1945 – The United Kingdom holds its first General Election in ten years with the Labour Party earning 393 of the 640 seats in the House of Commons. Clement Attlee was elected prime minister, replacing Conservative Party leader Winston Churchill, who had served throughout World War II and Attlee would serve until 1951 when he would be replaced by Churchill. A total of 25 parties had at least one candidate stand for election with 15 winning at least one seat.

In 1946 – Sam Snead of the US wins the British Open, shooting a final round 75 to win by two strokes at the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland. It was the first and only British Open title for Snead and was his second of seven Grand Slam wins and his 75 remains the highest final-round score by a major winner. Snead retired in 1965 with a record 82 tour victories, a mark later tied by Tiger Woods.

In 1980 – Billy Joel is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the fourth of six consecutive weeks with Glass Houses. It was the sixth of 24 chart albums for Joel and his second of four #1s. The album also went to #1 in Iceland and Canada, peaked at #9 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 4th-biggest album of the year. It produced four chart singles, including the #1 It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has a laugh at the VSO. Today’s Diary.

He comes over and we confidentially put an arm around his shoulder and in a hushed tone note that you know, sometimes it takes three flushes…The acoustics being what they are the hushed tone was unnecessary because unless we spoke in sign language Paula would be able to hear everything.

In 1776 – Members of the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, approve the Declaration of Independence when “…the committee of the whole Congress…agreed to a Declaration…”. The Declaration had been written primarily by Thomas Jefferson and had been presented to Congress on June 28. On July 2, Congress had declared the United States independent from Great Britain, saying  they “…are, and, of right, ought to be, Free and Independent States….”

In 1954 – West Germany wins the World Cup soccer title, defeating Hungary 3-2 in the championship match in Bern, Switzerland. It was the first of three titles for West Germany and the second and most recent runner-up finish for Hungary. In pool play, Hungary had defeated West Germany 8-3 and the title match is recognized as one of the greatest upsets in World Cup final history. The day before, Austria had defeated Uraguay for third place.

In 1964 – The Beach Boys are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with I Get Around. It was the ninth of 35 Top 40 hits for the group, their fifth ot 15 Top 10 songs, and was their first of four #1s. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #7 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 5th-biggest song of the year. The song spent nine weeks in the Top 10 and 15 weeks on the Hot 100.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
Knowledge is power.

The American League record for games pitched in a season is, like the National League record, held by Mike Marshall who pitched in 90 games in 1979 for the Minnesota Twins.. Marshal also holds National and American League records for most games by a relief pitcher in a season and most games finished in a season, and is the only major league player to hold single-season records in both leagues in three categories.

In 1884 – The Dow Jones Company publishes its first stock index in its Customer Afternoon Newsletter, a forerunner of the Wall Street Journal. The index consisted of nine railroads, a shipping company, and Western Union and its closing that first day was 69.93. Today it is known as the Dow Jones Transportation Average and closed Friday at 15,529.77. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was first published in 1896.

In 1974 – Mike Marshall of the Los Angeles Dodgers establishes the modern major league record for most consecutive games by a pitcher in a 4-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. It was the 13th consecutive game for Marshall, who pitched two-thirds of an inning and earned his 11th save of the year. Research into whose record Marshall broke was inconclusive and the mark was tied in 1986 by Dale Mahorcic of the Texas Rangers and still stands. Marshall would go 1-0 with two saves during the streak and he would appear in 106 games that season, still the major league record.

In 1961 – Gary US Bonds is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week Quarter to Three. It was the second of nine Top 40 hits for Bonds, his second of five Top 10s and remains his only #1 song. The song also peaked at #3 on Billboard’s soul chart and went to #7 in Great Britain. Stories that producer Frank Guida picked Bonds off the street and that no one knew the tape recorder was running appear to be legends.
